3 Types of Cable:
– Straight through cables,
– Crossover cables, and
– Rollover cables
Types of Cable
What Is Straight Through Cable?
A straight through cable is a type of twisted pair cable that is used in local
area networks to connect a computer to a network hub such as a router.
This type of cable is also sometimes called a patch cable and is an
alternative to wireless connections where one or more computers access a
router through a wireless signal. On a straight through cable, the wired
pins match. Straight through cable use one wiring standard: both ends use
T568A wiring standard or both ends use T568B wiring standard. The
following figure shows a straight through cable of which both ends are
wired as the T568B standard.
Straight through cables are primarily used for connecting unlike devices.
Use straight through Ethernet cable for the following cabling:
Switch to router
Switch to PC or server
Hub to PC or server
Crimping tool
The purpose of the crimping tool is to form a secure connection that is
properly sealed from any gas or moisture, preventing shortages or
faulty electrical connections. It allows electricians to form a solderless
connection between two wires, or to terminate a strand of wire.
Crimping network cables involves attaching connectors (usually RJ45 connectors) to the ends of
the cable. Here's a step-by-step guide for crimping three types of network cables: Straight-
Through, Crossover, and Rollover cables.
Materials Needed:
Ethernet cable (Cat5e or Cat6)
RJ45 connectors
Crimping tool
Wire cu er/stripper
Cable tester (op onal but recommended)
Straight-Through Cable:
Prepare the Cable:
Strip about 1.5 inches (3-4 cm) of outer insula on from the cable. Arrange
the wires in either T568A or T568B configura on.
Insert and Arrange Wires:
Insert wires into RJ45 connector, following the chosen configura on.
Trim Excess Wires:
Cut any protruding wires flush with the end of the connector.
Crimp the Connector:
Place connector into crimping tool and squeeze firmly to secure it.
Test the Cable:
Op onally, use a cable tester to ensure proper connec vity.
Crossover Cable:
Prepare and Arrange Wires:
Strip outer insula on and arrange wires in T568A configura on on one end
and T568B on the other.
Insert Wires into Connector:
Insert wires into RJ45 connector, ensuring they reach the end and follow
the chosen configura ons.
Trim Excess Wires:
Cut any excess wire s cking out of the connector.
Crimp the Connector:
Place connector into crimping tool and squeeze firmly to secure it.
Test the Cable:
Op onally, use a cable tester to verify proper connec vity.
Rollover Cable:
Prepare and Arrange Wires:
Strip outer insula on and arrange wires with reversed pin assignments on
each end.
Insert Wires into Connector:
Insert wires into RJ45 connector, ensuring they reach the end and follow
the reversed pin assignments.
Trim Excess Wires:
Cut any excess wire flush with the end of the connector.
Crimp the Connector:
Place connector into crimping tool and squeeze firmly to secure it.
Test the Cable:
Op onally, use a cable tester to ensure proper interface with the device.
