Ethernet Cable
Ethernet Cable/LAN Cable:
An Ethernet cable or Network cable is a cord used to connect devices
together on a Network to transfer broadband data. Ethernet cables connect
devices on local area networks such as PCs, routers and switches.

3 Types of Cable:
– Straight through cables,
– Crossover cables, and
– Rollover cables

Types of Cable
What Is Straight Through Cable?
A straight through cable is a type of twisted pair cable that is used in local
area networks to connect a computer to a network hub such as a router.
This type of cable is also sometimes called a patch cable and is an
alternative to wireless connections where one or more computers access a
router through a wireless signal. On a straight through cable, the wired
pins match. Straight through cable use one wiring standard: both ends use
T568A wiring standard or both ends use T568B wiring standard. The
following figure shows a straight through cable of which both ends are
wired as the T568B standard.
Straight through cables are primarily used for connecting unlike devices.
Use straight through Ethernet cable for the following cabling:
 Switch to router
 Switch to PC or server
 Hub to PC or server

Straight-Through Wired Cables

Straight-Through refers to cables that have the pin assignments on each
end of the cable. In other words, Pin 1 connector A goes to Pin 1 on
connector B, Pin 2 to Pin 2, etc. Straight-Through wired cables are most
commonly used to connect a host to a client. When we talk about cat5e
patch cables, the Straight-Through wired cat5e patch cable is used to
connect computers, printers, and other network client devices to the router
switch or hub (the host device in this instance).
What Is Crossover Cable?
A crossover Ethernet cable is a type of Ethernet cable used to connect
computing devices together directly. Unlike straight through cable, the
RJ45 crossover cable uses two different wiring standards: one end uses
the T568A wiring standard, and the other end uses the T568B wiring
standard. The internal wiring of Ethernet crossover cables reverses the
transmit and receive signals. It is most often used to connect two devices
of the same type: e.g. two computers (via network interface controller) or
two switches to each other.
Crossover cables are use for connecting a like devices.
Use crossover cables for the following cabling:
 Switch to switch
 Switch to hub
 Hub to hub
 Router to router
 Router Ethernet port to PC NIC
 PC to PC

Crossover Wired Cables

Crossover wired cables (commonly called crossover cables) are very
much like Straight-Through cables with the exception that TX and RX
lines are crossed (they are at opposite positions on either end of the cable.
Using the 568-B standard as an example below, you will see that Pin 1 on
connector A goes to Pin 3 on connector B. Pin 2 on connector A goes to
Pin 6 on connector B, etc. Crossover cables are most commonly used to
connect two hosts directly. Examples would be connecting a computer
directly to another computer, connecting a switch directly to another
switch, or connecting a router to a router. Note: While in the past, when
connecting two host devices directly, a crossover cable was required.
Nowadays, most devices have auto-sensing technology that detects the
cable and device and crosses pairs when needed.

What Is Rollover Cable?

A rollover cable is a network cable that connects a computer terminal to a
network router’s console port. It is also referred to as a Cisco console
cable and is normally flat and light blue so as to distinguish it from other
network cable types. The pin-outs on one end of the cable are reversed
from the opposite end, which is how the cable derived its name.
Rollover Wired Cables
Rollover wired cables, most commonly called rollover cables, have
opposite Pin assignments on each end of the cable or, in other words, it is
"rolled over." Pin 1 of connector A would be connected to Pin 8 of
connector B. Pin 2 of connector A would be connected to Pin 7 of
connector B and so on. Rollover cables, sometimes referred to as Yost
cables are most commonly used to connect to a device's console port to
make programming changes to the device. Unlike crossover and straight-
wired cables, rollover cables are not intended to carry data but instead
create an interface with the device.
