COLUMN DESIGN PROCEDURE

STEP—1: Load Calculation

Superimposed DL, LL, Self-weight of slab & beam, Wall load
Assume, the unit weight of concrete = 25 KN/m^3
STEP—2: AF, BM & SF Calculation
BM Coefficient from Tables 12 of IS 456:2000.
SF calculation as per cl 7.5 of IS 13920:2016.
STEP—3: Design Inputs
Grade of concrete M20
Nominal cover (cl 26.4.2.1 IS 456:2000)
Calculate unsupported length(l) = F/F height – Beam depth
Assume column dimension.
Effective length (𝑙 ) = 0.65 x unsupported length(l) [cl Table 28, IS 456:2000]

Check the column is short or slender

STEP—5: Calculate minimum eccentricity [cl 25.4 IS 456:2000]

STEP—6: Calculate the area of steel

(a) For axially loaded column [cl 39.3 IS 456:2000]
(b) For axial load and uniaxial BM [cl 39.5 IS 456:2000]
Calculate, & then using SP-16 find and then calculate Area of steel
(c) For axial load and biaxial BM [cl 39.6 IS 456:2000]
Assume 𝑝 , calculate , , and using SP-16, find and
Check:

STEP—7: Check for maximum & minimum longitudinal reinforcement [cl 26.5.3.1 IS
456:2000]
STEP—8: Design for lateral ties (cl 26.5.3.2, IS 456:2000)
(a) Calculate column shear capacity following cl 40.2.2 of IS 456:2000.
(b) For pitch and diameter of ties [cl 26.5.3.2 c, pg-49, IS 456:2000]
STEP—9: Checking for Strong Column Weak beam. cl 7.2 of IS 13920:2016.
STEP—10: Detailing drawing.
a) Cross section: Follow SP 34: 1987. Fig. 7.5, pg. 87.
b) Longitudinal section:
i) Special confining reinforcement as per cl 8.1 of IS 13920:2016.
ii) For transverse reinforcement detailing in beam, follow cl 6.3.5 of IS
13920:2016.
iii) For anchorage length of longitudinal bar of beam follow cl 6.2.5. of IS
