NEW SWIMMING FACILITY, NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF BOYS AND GIRLS

CLUB

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Boston has announced the opening of a new
swimming facility in the South End. Along with the new facility comes a new executive
director of the Boys and Girls Club.

Richard Goodman of Lynn has spent the last five years as the director of the
Charlestown Boys and Girls Club. Before that, he spent 15 years working as the head
coach at the Lynn YMCA, where his girls swim team won nine district championships.

Friends and peers of Goodman say that away from the swimming pools and loud
competitions, he is a quiet and thoughtful man who is always willing to lend a helping
hand.

He can also be recognized for his number one hobby, raising flowers. His specialty is in
orchids. He diligently cares for them, and enters them in competitions across the
country.

Richard Goodman says, “I knew my diligent, selfless efforts to build a team would be
recognized in the long run, much like a hearty perennial will bloom even after a
challenging winter. It’s a good lesson for kids.”

Business News Story:

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Boston has hired a new executive director for the
swimming facility that has recently been opened in the South End.

Richard Goodman of Lynn was officially hired today. This comes after his long years
working first as a swim coach at the Lynn YMCA for 15 years, and then as the director
for the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club for another five years.

Goodman says, “I am thrilled to help one of Boston’s premier youth organizations

inaugurate a state-of-the-art facility. I look forward to expanding community membership
and allowing children citywide to swim in an Olympic-size pool.”

This pool will be a great addition to the city, adding more accessible places to swim. In
addition to that, it also comes with an experienced director, ensuring the safety of all
who go to this facility.

Feature Story:

Across from me, surrounded by flowers and being perfectly hit by the sunlight filtering
through the windows of the greenhouse we are sitting in, sits Richard Goodman. Many
ribbons hang on the walls, pinned up with thumbtacks. Orchids of many different colors
sit on the tables set up around us.

Goodman raises flowers as a hobby, with orchids being his specialty. He enters these
special flowers into competitions across the country. That’s where he earned all the
ribbons. One of his renowned purple-striped orchids was awarded the top prize at last
year’s New England Flower Show at the Seaport World Trade Center.

He says, “Throughout my life, flowers have given me a sense of beauty and tranquility
that transcends the stress and confusion we encounter in the world.”

Goodman having a peaceful place to retreat makes sense, given the fact that he has
worked as a swim coach for 15 years and a director of the Charlestown Boys and Girls
Club for the past five years. Now, he has to step into the position of executive director
for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Boston! Of course he would want to have a quiet
activity to do while he steps away from the loud and stuffy pools.

Goodman has been participating in this hobby for around ten years now, expressing
that it’s one of the most important parts of his days now to care for his flowers. He says
that they really help him to maintain a clear mind and to
Friends and peers of Richard Goodman say that outside of the pools, with all the
children running around and with all of the noise, he is a very quiet and thoughtful man.
This is clearly evident in his care for the flowers that he nurses!

It seems to be a stark contrast, being a swim coach and pool director compared to
caring for flowers. But caring for flowers and entering them in competitions gives
Goodman the same amount of challenge as bringing together a swim team.
