1 SCOPE
This specification establishes the requirements for classification, qualification and
batch/lot acceptance criteria for 7475-T7351 aluminum alloy plate.
This product is used primarily for structural applications requiring high strength,
moderate fatigue strength, high fracture toughness and good resistance to stress
corrosion.
The purchase of material to this specification shall be from an approved source as
listed in Bombardier Aerospace Engineering Material Manual (BAEMM-001).
Materials manufactured to this specification shall be controlled by a Process
Control Document (PCD).
2 CLASSIFICATION
The material qualification to this specification shall be classified using the
following criteria:
Temper T7351
Material specified on Engineering Drawings shall be shown as 7475-T7351 per
BAMS 516-002.
4 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS
Except where a specific issue is indicated, the issue of the following documents in
effect at the time of manufacture shall form a part of this specification to the
extent indicated herein.
AMS 4202 Aluminum Alloy Plate 5.7Zn - 2.2Mg - 1.6Cu - 0.22Cr (7475-
T7351) Solution Heat Treated, Stress Relieved by Stretching,
and Precipitation Heat Treated
AMS 2355 Quality Assurance Sampling and Testing, Aluminum Alloys
and Magnesium Alloys, Wrought Products, Except Forging
Stock, and Rolled, Forged, or Flash Welded Rings
ASTM B594 Standard Practice for Ultrasonic Inspection of Aluminum-Alloy
Wrought Products for Aerospace Applications
ASTM B660 Standard Practices for Packaging/Packing of Aluminum and
Magnesium Products
ASTM B666 Standard Practice for Identification Marking of Aluminum and
Magnesium Products
ASTM E399 Standard Test Method for Linear-Elastic Plane-Strain Fracture
Toughness KIc of Metallic Materials
ASTM E561 Recommended Practice for R-Curve Determination
5 DEFINITIONS
Not applicable.
6 MATERIALS
Not applicable.
7 MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS
Every lot of material shall be tested for fracture toughness per ASTM E399 for
thicknesses over 0.749 inch (19.02 mm) and shall meet the requirement of AMS
4202.
For plate over 0.249 inch to 0.749 inch (6.32 mm to 19.02 mm) inclusive, the
supplier shall guarantee fracture toughness per ASTM E561 to the requirements of
Table 1.
7.2.2 QUALITY
Each lot of plate greater than 0.500 inch (12.70 mm), irrespective of weight or
thickness, shall be ultrasonically tested per ASTM B594 and shall meet Class A
ultrasonic requirements.
Plate shall be tested from one side, defined or not by drawing, and that side shall
be identified to show “Ultrasonically inspected on this side” or equivalent.
The maximum dead zone thickness on both the transducer side and the opposite
side shall be 0.120 inch (3.05 mm).
Upon review of all test results, audit report and PCD, BAMPE shall advise in
writing Bombardier Aerospace Quality of the Technical acceptance of the
manufacturer and products. Qualified products to BAMS 516-002 shall be listed
in BAEMM-001. Only approved manufacturers listed in BAASL can be added to
BAEMM-001.
Sustained qualification is dependent upon the manufacturer meeting the
requirements of this specification as set forth by BAMPE. In event that the
manufacturer falls short of the requirements, BAMPE reserves the right to revoke
qualification status of the product through informing Bombardier Aerospace
Quality.
The manufacturer is responsible for the performance of all inspection and testing
of each batch/lot as specified in Section 7 using test specimens and test procedures
specified prior to submission of the material to the purchaser for acceptance.
The manufacturer shall issue a report that shall include purchase order number,
batch/lot number, material specification, Process Control Document (PCD)
number and revision level, individual and average test results and date of report.
Bombardier Aerospace Materials and Processes Engineering (BAMPE) reserves
the right to perform any or all of the tests outlined in this specification. Any test
resulting in a failure will necessitate a return of the batch/lot of material to the
manufacture.
10 PROCUREMENT REQUIREMENTS
Product furnished under this specification for production use shall be qualified to
the requirements of this specification prior to placement of a purchase order.
