1. Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to utilize their knowledge on four modes (lydian, ionian, mixolydian, and
dorian) to visually and aurally differentiate them
2. Assessment:
In-class, formal and in-formal assessment
- Formative assessment: quiz answer sheets that the students will fill out
- Informal diagnostic: their participation during checking answers and rhythm activity
2. Review lydian
a. Review the raised/lowered notes on lydian
in relation to ionian: #4
b. Listen to it on the piano
c. Review the solfege and sing it: do, re, mi,
fi, sol, la ti, do
2. Be introduced to dorian
a. Recognize the difference in dorian based
on ionian scale
- Show ionian next to dorian
- Find the difference
between the two (b3, b7)
- Learn that dorian includes
b3 and b7
- Listen to the ionian scale and
dorian scale on the piano
b. Recognize the difference between dorian
based on the lydian scale
- Show lydian next to mixolydian
- Find the difference
between the two (#4 and
b3, b7)
- Listen to the dorian scale and
mixolydian scale on the piano
c. Recognize the difference between dorian
based on the mixolydian scale
- Show mixolydian next to dorian
- Find the difference
between the two (#4 and
b3, b7)
- Listen to the dorian scale and
mixolydian scale on the piano
d. Listening
- Listen to the lydian scale, then
dorian scale on the piano
- Listen to the ionian scale, then
dorian scale on the piano
- Listen to the dorian scale, then

- Listen to all four on the piano:

e. Recognized the difference between
mixolydian in relation to solfege
- Review the interval of lydian scale
