OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY UNDERSTANDING BY DESIGN TEMPLATE

Course Name: Animal Sciences Teacher: Ms. Stansell

Unit Topic: Nutrition Approximate Length: 1 hr 15 min
Stage 1 – Desired Results
Established Goals:
- Draw a Pearsons square
- Comprehend why we use Pearson squares
- Practice using the Pearson square method

Standards:
AS.03.02: Analyze feed rations and assess if they meet the nutritional needs of animals
AS.03.02.02.b. Appraise the adequacy of
feed rations using data from the analysis of
feedstuffs, animal requirements and performance

Students will understand… Essential Questions:

Why we use pearson squares, why we balance rations How does balancing a ration benefit a livestock producer?

Students will know… Students will be able to…

How to use a pearson square to meet the nutritional Calculate the proportion of two feeds
requirements in a ration

Stage 2 – Assessment Evidence

Performance Tasks: Other Evidence:
Notes Formative checks, as we review as a class asking what number
Worksheet practice do we plug in where, how can we check our work, on a scale of
1-5 how are we feeling about this, have students use cards on
Reviewing as a class
their desk to indicate where they’re at, etc
Extra practice

Student Self-Assessment and Reflection:

Their notes, how well they do on their worksheet, check-ins throughout class, what card they have up
Stage 3 – Learning Plan
Learning Activities:
- Intro (10 min): Go over agenda, objectives, essential questions
- Video (10 min): Watch video explaining the pearson square and then discuss a little after the video
- Transition (5 min): ask students to get a worksheet packet
- Notes (15-20): go over notes and step by step on one problem
- Check in- ask students 1-5 how they’re feeling, possibly do another problem together
- Work time (rest of class): allow students to work through the problems on their own/with their table group. While students
are working go around and stamp their worksheet from last class
- Review: if there's time go over the problems with the class to ensure everyone knows how to do the calculations
- Any additional time use to go over a few more problems together on the board

- If students finish early there’s additional practice problems to complete

One student in this class has math accommodations, check in with her frequently. Ask her how she’s feeling about this conent and
if she wants to challenge herself with the worksheet or if she would like the modified worksheet. The modified worksheet has
fewer problems and the Pearson square already set up with the numbers labeled.
