This presentation is designed as a slow introduction into the use of moments in basic
engineering. Several different techniques for calculating cross products are shown, and ther is an
advantage in knowing a bit about each of them.

Questions: Due by the end of class.

1. Why is minimizing a moment in the members of a structure usually a good idea?

2. Why is it necessary to always use a right-handed coordinate system?

3. Is it possible to use technique 4 with arbitrary 3D vectors? Explain.

4 If computing the moment about a point, do I always need to use the point where the force acts
in my computation? Why or why not?

5. Is there any disadvantage to using F = M / r to compute a force?
