Proposal for Senior Capstone Project

Title: Discrimination in Social Media Ads

Introduction:

This proposal outlines my senior capstone project aimed at addressing the important issue of

discrimination in social media advertising. Advertising plays a crucial role in shaping societal

perceptions, yet it often perpetuates stereotypes and biases, exacerbating inequalities. This

project seeks to analyze the various forms of discrimination prevalent in social media advertising

and propose effective strategies to mitigate its harmful effects.

Problem Statement:

Discrimination in social media ads remains a major concern, encouraging stereotypes based on

race, gender, and age, contributing to already existing inequalities. Despite efforts to promote

diversity and inclusivity, discriminatory practices continue in the advertising industry, resulting

in racial disparities.

Proposed Approach:

This project will use secondary research to investigate current trends and practices in social

media advertising, with a focus on cases of discrimination and their consequences. Case studies,

scholarly literature, and industry reports will be analyzed to identify common patterns of

discrimination in advertising campaigns. In addition, the project will look into potential solutions

and best practices for increasing diversity and inclusivity in social media advertising.
Interdisciplinary Connections:

This senior capstone project, titled "Combatting Discrimination in Social Media Advertising,"

focuses on disciplines such as sociology and media studies to investigate how advertising

reinforces societal biases and stereotypes. In sociology, discriminatory advertising practices

perpetuate systemic inequalities by excluding specific groups and reflecting larger social

structures. Similarly, in media studies, representations of people of color are frequently distorted

or misrepresented in advertisements, reflecting cultural bias. This project, which investigates

discrimination in social media advertising and advocates for inclusive practices, is consistent

with the principles of social justice and media ethics emphasized in these disciplines.

Conclusion:

Addressing discrimination in social media advertising is critical to promoting inclusivity and

fairness. This project seeks to identify the root causes of discrimination, propose effective

solutions, and advocate for positive changes to advertising practices. Through extensive research

and advocacy, I hope to raise awareness of discriminatory practices in social media advertising

and promote a media landscape that values diversity and equity for all.
