MATH 7

Dear God,
We thank you a hundredfold for
the infinite love and care You
have given us. May we through
your blessings, add purity to the
world, subtract evils from our
lives, multiply the good news of
your son, and divide your gifts
and share it to others. Amen.

REAL NUMBER SYSTEM
Terms to Remember…. example

❑ Natural numbers – natural counting numbers

{ 1, 2, 3, ….}

❑ Whole numbers – natural counting numbers and zero { 0,1, 2, 3....}

❑ Integers – Positive or negative natural numbers or zero { -2, -1, 0, 1, 2,…}

1 3
−7
❑ Rational Number – any number which can be written as a fraction. 2
46 17
0.17 = 100
1

❑ Irrational Number – Any decimal number which can’t be written as

a fraction. 3 5
π = 3.1415926…
– A non-terminating and non-repeating decimal.

❑ Real Numbers – rational numbers and

irrational numbers.
Arranging real numbers in order…
Example #1: Arrange the following real numbers in ascending order:
1
{-4, , 4.5, √36 } _______, ______, _______, ________
2

Example #2: Arrange the following real numbers in descending order:

8
{-6, - , 5 , 0} _______, ______, _______, ________

Let’s try!
Identify each number below as natural, whole, integer, rational, irrational, or
real. Put a check mark on your answer/s.
Real Whole Natural
Number Rational Irrational Integers
Number Number Number

1. 64
2. 0

Arrange the following real numbers in ascending and descending order:

4
{-7, , 7, √1 }

SCIENTIFIC NOTATION
Significant Digits….

1. Nonzero digits are always significant. Numbers from 1 to 9 are considered

significant.
ex. 13 784
2. Zeros between two significant digits are significant.
ex. 12 006
3. ONLY a final zero or trailing zeros in the decimal portion are significant.
ex. 106.00
4. Zeros appearing in front of nonzero digits are not significant.
ex. 0.00024
Scientific Notation…
A special way of writing too big and too small numbers that are
difficult to express.
𝒏
𝒂 𝒙 𝟏𝟎
1 ≤ 𝒂 < 10 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒏𝒕

SMALL NUMBER – the exponent is negative.

0.0025 0.000315 0.01708 0.0000039

BIG NUMBER – the exponent is positive.

24 500 51 300 710 000 8 000 000
EXPONENT IS POSITIVE EXPONENT IS NEGATIVE
move decimal point to the right move decimal point to the left

We move the decimal point to the right since our exponent is

𝟏. 𝟓 𝒙 𝟏𝟎𝟖 positive. We move the point as many times as the exponent
indicates. Do not write the power of ten anymore.

𝟏. 𝟓 𝒙 𝟏𝟎−𝟖 We move the decimal point to the left since our exponent is
negative. We move the point as many times as the exponent
indicates. Do not write the power of ten anymore.
Let’s try!
Express the following in scientific notation.

1. 452 000

2. 0.000 179

Express the following in standard form

1. 3.1 x 10-7

2. 1.67 x 108
