from the Greek word "ek-ka-lein"

usually for a religious purpose.

These are essential characteristics of the life of the
Church that help us to distinguish it from all other
churches. They are grounded in Christ and Holy Spirit’s
working on the Church. They make us realize how deep
and extensive is the call of the Catholic faith.

 2. The Church is Holy
• Because its founder and head, Christ, is
holy and its soul, the Holy Spirit
sanctifies and graces all its members.

• It is holy because it fosters the holiness

of its members endowed with Scriptures,
Apostolic Tradition, Creeds, Sacraments,
moral principles and virtues, saints with
or without canonization.
3. The Church is Catholic
• Catholic means “universal, complete,
all-embracing.”
• All people everywhere are invited to
become members of the Church.
• It is Catholic or universal because it
continues to teach everything that
Christ taught and gives witness to all
that Christ did.
• Mark 16:15

 4. The Church is Apostolic
• The Church passes on all authentic
teachings of the apostles to generations
of Christians through all ages through
living traditions.

• The Church continues to be instructed,

sanctified, and guided by the apostles
and their successors, the bishops.
This is the sole Church of Christ, which in
the Creed we profess to be one, holy,
catholic, and apostolic. These four
characteristics, inseparably linked with
each other, indicate essential features of
the Church and her mission. -CCC 811

life and to call everyone and not exclude anyone
even the sinners so that altogether we may be
taught of the what the Apostles passed on to us
which will eventually lead us into having
communion with our Risen Jesus Christ.
