1.0 Introduction
1.1 Project Description
M/s SRC Infra Developers Pvt Ltd has proposed to carry out soil investigations and field testing for
the Project “Rehabilitation and Up gradation to 2-lane with paved shoulders configuration of Gondiguda
to Araku (up to Bhallaguda) section (Km 27.480 to Km 51.772) of NH-516 E in the state of Andhra Pradesh
under Green National Highways Corridor Project (GNHCP) with the Loan Assistance of World Bank on
EPC Mode (COS Minor Bridge at A Grade Junction km 157.8)”.
KDM Engineers (India) Pvt. Ltd. was entrusted with the task of carrying out soil exploration, field
testing and reporting of key findings of Ground Investigation.
1.2 Purpose of Study
The overall purpose of this study is to conduct a geotechnical investigation to assess the SBC for
foundation design for the above project. To accomplish these purposes the study was conducted in the
following phases:
 Drilling of 03 boreholes BH-3(P-1), BH-4(A-2) and BH-5(A-1).
 Testing samples in laboratory to determine the engineering properties of the strata.
 Analyzing all field and laboratory data to develop preliminary geotechnical recommendations for
foundations
1.3 Index of the report
The initial sections of this report presents brief descriptions of above project site the field work
along with list of various laboratory tests conducted. This is followed by bore-wise presentation and
the recommendations and report concludes with a summary of the principal findings and
recommendations. All field and laboratory data is presented in the appendix Bore Hole Wise.
2.0 Field Investigation
2.1 Boring/Sampling:
Different types of explorations, borings are the most practical and relatively correct method of obtaining
sub-surface information. The bore hole 150 mm diameter was sunk as per specifications and IS: 1892
and was extended up to 10.0m depth (Maximum depth of Exploration). Casings as required were used to
retain the borehole. The borehole was progressed using Rotary drilling machine.
2.2 Standard Penetration Tests:
Standard Penetration Tests ( SPT ) were conducted in the boreholes at every 1.5m depth by connecting
the split spoon sampler to SPT rod and driving it by 45 cm using 63.5 kg hammer falling freely from a
height of 75 cm . The tests were conducted in accordance with IS 2131 – 1981.
The number of blows for each 15 cm of penetration of the split spoon sampler was recorded. The
number of blows required to penetrate the initial 15 cm of the split spoon is ignored for seating the
sampler due to possible presence of loose materials or cutting from the drilling operation. The
cumulative number of blows required to penetrate the balance 30 cm out of 45 cm is termed as the SPT
or N values. The N values are presented on the soil profile for each borehole up to the Refusal and
stopped for further boring into the refusal; the refusal can be considered when the N value exceeds 50
blows for 30 cm penetration. Standard Penetration Test ( SPT ) are conducted in the boreholes at 1.5 m
depth intervals by connecting the split spoon sampler to SPT rod and driving it by 45 cm using a 63.5 kg
hammer falling freely from a height of 75 cm . The test was conducted in accordance with IS 2131 –
1981.

2.3 Rotary core drilling:
Conventional diamond core drilling equipment was used for drilling vertical holes up to specified depth
at each location. Rotary core drilling in rock was carried out according to IS 1892-1979. This drilling
technique was regarded as the most satisfactory method of assessing the character of rock formation,
which lies at depth below the ground surface. Specimens of rock in the form of cylindrical cores were
recovered from the drill hole by means of a core barrel. Double barrel technique was adopted according
to field condition. The core barrel was provided at its lower end with a detachable shoe or core bit,
which is of diamond. All rotary core bits were of NX (75mm) size.

2.4 Sampling:
The details of these bore holes including field of Standard Penetration and also collection of disturbed
soil samples are given in Bore Logs enclosed , labeled properly, disturbed & SPT representative samples
of sub-surface deposits were collected from bore holes, labeled depth wise and placed in polythene bags.
Reference Numbers and depth of these samples are shown in Bore Log Data Sheets.
Cores recovered from hard strata were arranged in a core box with proper leveling and identification
mark. From the rock strata core recovery {CR% = (Length of Core /Length of run) x 100} & rock
quality designation (RQD) = (total length of core pieces of more than 100mm /length of run) x 100}
were computed for every drilling run. Summary of CR and RQD in different boreholes is presented.
Depth and details of the sample are shown in the borehole logs (Annexure).

2.5 Measurement of Water Level:

Depth of level of water was noted when struck in. This is termed as depth of observed water level below
existing ground level (EGL). Depth of standing water (SWL) below EGL after 24 hours of removal of
casing was also noted. Standing water level was not encountered during the progress of soil exploration
in all the Boreholes. However ground water table effect may be taken for design purpose as
indicated in IS 6403:1981.

 The SPT N Value 100 has been restricted to 50 for calculation of SBC and Settlement in
soil and SDR.
 As Per IS 12070 Clause No 7.1 where the rock is of Low strength and has discontinuities at
a very close spacing, or is weathered or fragmented, it is common practice in such cases to
consider the rock as a granular mass and to design the foundation on the basis of
conventional soil mechanics that’s why the SBC calculation has been done by considering
SPT N value as greater than 100.
 For BH-3 (P-1) at 3.0m depth and For BH-4(A-2) at 3.0m and 4.0m depth because of
unavailability of rock core samples for UCS the SBC has been calculated by considering as
Granular mass and assuming the SPT N value as greater than 100.

8.0Recommendations:
1. Based upon the Soil investigation and Laboratory test results we have arrived at the following
Conclusions:-
a) The soil Investigation has been done for Major Bridge.
b) For BH-3 (P-1) and BH-5 (A-1) an Open Foundation can be recommended at a depth of 4.0m
with Safe Bearing Capacity of 80 T/m2 by taking an embedment depth of 1.5m into the
Rock.
c) For BH4 (A-2) an Open Foundation can be recommended at a depth of 5.0m with Safe
Bearing Capacity of 80 T/m2 by taking an embedment depth of 1.5m into the Rock.
d) . The Footings for open foundation to be connected by tie beams.
2. The above calculation and recommendations are based on borehole data and if any major variations
are observed during foundation excavation, suitable decisions are to be taken.

Safety precautions:

1. Proper drainage system should be provided for this site.

2. As Araku is coming under Zone-II seismic zone, safety precaution should be taken for earthquake
resistant as per IS: 1893.

3. This general recommendation is not structure-specific and the designer is at liberty to decide the
depth and the type of foundation intended basing on the sub-soil characteristics made available in this
report.

Minimum uniaxial compressive strength, qc = 659.4 kg/cm²

qs = qc x 0.25= 164.9 kg/cm²

Taking a conservative factor of safety of 5 to account for settlements,

The allowable bearing capacity = qs/5
32.97 kg/cm²
329.7 t/m2

Taking a water reduction factor of 0.75,

Rock Sample SBC Calculation for BH-05 at depth 7.0m:

The Bearing Capacity is calculated using the Uniaxial Compressive Strength of Rock Cores
(IS: 12070-1987) UCS 58.10
The safe bearing capacity is calculated using the following equation.
qs =qcN j
Where qs = Safe bearing capacity with a factor of safety of 3
qc = Average Uniaxial compressive strength of rock cores

Nj = Empirical coefficient depending on the spacing of

discontinuities. For the range of RQD value, this coefficient is
taken as 0.25 assuming the joint spacing of 1 m- 3 m.

Minimum uniaxial compressive strength, qc = 581 kg/cm²

qs = qc x 0.25= 145.3 kg/cm²

Taking a conservative factor of safety of 5 to account for settlements,

The allowable bearing capacity = qs/5
29.05 kg/cm²
290.5 t/m2

Taking a water reduction factor of 0.75,
