CHAPTER 1

Background of the Study

According to a World Bank study in 2022, 21% of people worldwide who

are employed feel that there is a mismatch between their skills and the
requirements of their jobs. This highlights a notable gap between education and
career choices for a substantial number of individuals. The misalignment of
personal factors, social influences, and economic circumstances has implications
for the future and well-being of graduates.
Choosing a college major and future career is exceptionally important for
Senior High School (SHS) graduates in rural Philippines. Unlike their urban
counterparts, they confront this crucial decision with limited resources, unique
social dynamics, and distinctive economic conditions. Understanding the factors
that shape their career aspirations becomes even more critical in this context.
Rural SHS graduates encounter distinct challenges. They may have
restricted access to diverse career information, exposure to different fields, and
quality educational resources. Family expectations and community pressures
may override individual interests, and access to guidance counselors and career
development resources can be scarce. Additionally, limited job market options,
financial constraints, and restricted access to technology and information further
complicate their decision-making.
Identifying the factors influencing the career aspirations of rural SHS
graduates is crucial. By understanding their individual traits, the impact of
their social environment, and the economic context they face, we can offer
the necessary support and guidance. This may involve creating focused
career guidance programs, promoting awareness of diverse career options,
and providing resources tailored to the specific needs and limitations of
students in rural areas. Ultimately, this understanding empowers rural SHS
graduates to make informed choices, navigate their educational paths
effectively, and unlock their full potential for a fulfilling future.
