Unit I
Basics of Forensic Chemistry : introduction to forensic chemistry, types of cases in forensic
chemistry, presumptive tests, confirmatory tests, microchemical methods, alcohols and their analysis
Unit II
Basics of Forensic Toxicology : introduction, forensic toxicologist, history of toxicology, branches of
toxicology, standard terminology in toxicology
Unit III
Poisons : introduction, definitions, classification of poisons, physiological action and chemical nature,
poisons and poisoning in India, introduction to metabolism of various poisons, signs and symptoms of
common poisons, antidotes, collection and preservation of viscera, choice of preservatives, containers
and storage
Unit IV
Environmental Forensics : definitions, background and historical aspects, arsenic, pesticides,
mercury, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), biomarker fingerprints of oils and petroleum,
microbial forensic, radioactive tracers and dating
Unit V
Drugs of Abuse : introduction, drug addiction and its problems, drug and medicine, classification of
drugs of abuse, identification and analysis of drugs of abuse, field tests and laboratory tests, drugs of
abuse in sports
Unit VI
Arson and investigation : introduction, fire and arson, chemistry of fire, scientific investigation of
fire debris, collection, preservation and analysis of flammable residues
