Stress breakdown: Definition of stress

Stress is defined as the individual's response to the demands or pressures brought
about by internal or external factors that may cause mental tension, anxiety, or worry.
Stress is inevitable is life People respond to stress in different ways. Situations or factors
that trigger stress are what we call stressors.
Stressors can be big or small. They come and go, but sometimes they stay. They are also caused
by internal or external factors. How a person responds to stress determines stress tolerance.
The Two Types of Stress:

1. Eustress is positive stress because it motivates a person to continue, move on, and do
things to copy and productive. This good stress energizes the person and makes him or
her perform well or do better either in his or her job or in academics. When life's stress no
longer makes a person happy, this kind of stress is called distress.

2. Distress gives a negative impact on a person's life, particularly on his or her health, Bad
stress or distress happens when the person's stressors overwhelm him or her. This type of
stress can lead to mental and physical health problems such as depression, anxiety, panic
attack, fatigue, and burnout. When it is not treated, this can also cause a person to
develop unhealthy habits such as drinking, smoking, and binge-eating.

Positive Stressors (Eustress)

 Job Promotion

 Elected as an officer

 Marriage

 Vacation

 Additional course/ studies

 Transfer of home

 Celebration or event

 Additional family member

 Extracurricular activities in school

How to prevent stress?

1. Do a relaxation exercise- It slows your breathing, reduces your heart rate, and lowers
your stress hormones.
2. Use laughter- It reduces stress hormones and becomes an expression of joy, optimism,
and hope. "Watch a movie or TV show that makes you laugh.
3. Reduce loud noise in your environment- Loud noise triggers the stress response, it
makes it hard to think and takes you away from being mindful. If loud noise is
unavoidable — perhaps because it comes from neighbors, traffic, or someone in your
home or office — try wearing earplugs or noise-canceling headphones."
4. Counter negative thoughts- Positive thoughts help boost positive emotions. Find three
positive things for one negative or stressful thought
5. Reach out for help- We all want to be independent, but it’s okay to ask a friend or family
member to simply listen to your concerns or to help you with activities, such as getting
groceries, mowing the lawn, or lifting something heavy. Relieving a burden — either
physical or mental — will help reduce stress.

Negative Stressors (Distress)

 Injury (self or with a loved one)

 Hospitalization

 Separation of parents

 Death of a loved one

 Failing grades

 Breakup with a loved one

 Too much academic workload

 Sleep problem
