Sofia 5 47 I was just in the park with my friends. That day.
And I check my phone. And I have this missed call
from Sam. So I was like, that’s weird. Sam never
calls. He only texts.
And barely ever now he’s away at school.
So I try calling back, but he doesn't pick up. So
I’m like, oh well, I guess he just needed something
and he’s figured it out.
And then I get this text. It’s like this big...splurge.
I had to press “read more” like three times.
It says he’s sorry. And all this stuff about some
walk he took. And how he wants me to tell mum
and dad thank you. And tell Nana he loves her.
And take Elsie to the zoo for him once a year.
And at first I’m like...what the fuck? Is this some
kind of joke?
Then I call back and it’s not going through, so I
text, and that goes through but green, not blue, so
I know his phone’s off.
And at this point I start panicking.
I ask to borrow my friend’s phone to ring mum
because I don’t want mine to be engaged for even
a second in case he calls back, but it doesn’t go
through. And dad’s away for work in Boston, but I
try him. Nothing.
And at this point I’m fully like...
So Mum rings back and I don’t know what to say
so I'm just like, Sam is not okay. Sam is not okay.
And she gets straight in the car and drives off to
find you.
And I’m like, what am I meant to do? I can’t just...
So I go to the station and I get on a train.
I guess I thought – some part of me thought
maybe, if I was fast enough, I could still save you.
It’s so weird man, on the train. All around me
there’s just, people. There’s some dude on his
phone opposite me having a work meeting and
some kids watching TV on their mum’s phone and
outside there’s houses and fields and birds and I
just keep thinking my brother... Right now, my
brother...
