Exp 8: Production of component using FDM 3 – D Printing machine

AIM: Develop an AM Process required to produce the given Component on a 3-D Printing machine
 Prepare a Solid model and convert to STL File
 Select a suitable material for the given model
 Perform Machine setting and upload STL file
 Feed the Raw material
 Develop the Model and check for accuracies
CAD Software used: Solid Edge
Slicing software used: Cura
3D Printer used: Ender
About Cura Software
Cura Software is a powerful and easy-to-use 3D printing slicing software that has grown in
popularity among makers, hobbyists, professionals, and educators. Using this software, users can
prepare and slice 3D models for printing, as well as customise and optimise print settings for a variety
of 3D printers and materials.
Educators and students
If you are an educator or student, Cura can be a useful tool for preparing and optimising 3D
prints if you are an educator or student using 3D printing in your classrooms or research. It is simple to
use and comes with a wealth of documentation and resources, making it an excellent tool for learning
about and exploring the capabilities of 3D printing.

Features of Cura software

File preparation and slicing capabilities: Cura can import a variety of 3D model file formats and
allows users to scale, rotate and orient the model on the print bed. It has a multitude of parameters or
print settings that allow all levels of users to slice the model as per their custom requirements. Once
the parameters are set, the user can generate the G-code with just a click of a button.

Integrated 3D model viewer: Cura includes a built-in 3D model viewer that allows users to visualise
and manipulate their models in real time, making it simple to adjust the model’s orientation and
placement before printing.

Integrated Workflow: Software is just as important as a 3D printer when it comes to 3D printing. As

a result, having stable, reliable, and powerful software is critical. Cura integrates seamlessly with all
Ultimaker products, has CAD plug-in integration with SolidWorks, Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor,
and other applications, and is even compatible with a wide range of file types such as STL, OBJ, X3D,
3MF, BMP, GIF, JPG, and PNG.

Customizable print settings and profiles: Cura offers a variety of print settings, including layer
height, infill density, print speed, support, retraction, bed adhesion, and others. Users can also create
and save profiles for various printer models and materials, making it simple to switch between printing
configurations.
Support for a wide range of 3D printers and materials: Cura works with a wide range of 3D
printers and materials, including filament-based printers, resin printers, and others. It also includes a
library of pre-configured print profiles for many popular printer models and materials, making it
simple for users to begin their 3D printing projects.

Benefits of using Cura

Streamlines the 3D printing process
Cura makes it easier to prepare and optimise 3D prints by providing a variety of useful features
and tools. It can import a variety of 3D model file formats, allow users to rotate and position the model
on the print bed, and slice the model into G-code for printing.
Increases print quality and reliability
Cura has a number of customizable print settings, such as infill density, layer height, and print
speed, that can assist users in producing high-quality prints with few defects. It also has advanced
slicing algorithms that can aid in the reduction of print failures and the overall reliability of your 3D
prints.
Allows for greater control and customization of prints
Cura allows users to customise and optimise their print settings for a variety of 3D printers and
materials, giving them more control over the end result of their prints. Users can also create and save
profiles for various printer models and materials, making it simple to switch between printing
configurations.
Easy to use interface and extensive documentation
Cura has an easy-to-use interface and extensive documentation, making it simple for users to
learn how to use the software and make the most of their 3D printing projects. It also includes a useful
community forum where users can ask questions and receive help from other users.

Requirements
 Slicing: Cura Slicer
Procedure:
1. Switch ON the Creality Ender 3 machine.
2. Place the extruder assembly in home position to make the X, Y and Z axes back to the
mechanical zero point. by clicking Settings – Home – ok.
3. Preheat the Bed and Extruder by clicking + and - Tap symbol, we could set preheat
temperature; Long press + and - symbol to set preheat temperature rapidly;
4. The extruder is heated up to 220 0C. After heat completed, insert the filament into the extruder
at an upright angle until some resistance is sensed (as the filament is pushed through the
feeding wheel). Load will complete when you see filament come out of extruder.
5. After generating the G code file in flash print software, we can transfer it to your Adventurer 3
with different network methods. If use USB stick to print, please insert your USB stick with
target .g/.gx file to your Creality Ender 3, there will be no need to set new network.

6. After inserting the USB drive, Tap [Build], choose the file path: Printer internal memory, USB
stick, Cloud.
7. Choose the model file, tap on its right to start printing; or tap model picture or model name to
enter detail page, tap to start printing.
8. Extruder will heat up automatically, when heating finishes, the printer will start to build the
model. After printing completed, printer will sound a beep and pop out a notice on the touch
screen.
9. Take out the removable build plate. Bend the build plate, the plate will produce certain
deformation, separating the plate away from the bottom of model (Please use a scraper to assist
removing when model is too small or big).
