The rhythms were carefully counted and the pulse was mostly in safe control. A number of the notes
needed more focussed tone, however, and some clear dynamic contrasts would have been beneficial.
Nevertheless, there was a sense of involvement.

Trad. French: Sur le pont d’Avignon, arr. Wright 24/30

This was confidently played and many of the notes rang out with clarity, although needing safer tonal
consistency overall. Musical shaping would have enhanced the phrasing and there was room for more
rhythmic poise, but some of the song’s cheerful mood was conveyed.

Wright
The balance of melody and accompaniment was well arranged for most bars and there was safe
coordination. Rhythmic flow was a little hesitant along the way and the music did need more shape and
sense of direction.

Longworth & Walker: Spanish Knights 22/30

The rhythms were mostly in place, although with some hesitancy and a need for more dance-like
pointing. Stronger involvement would have enhanced the account, with some shape and colour added to
give expression. Whilst several notes lost tonal focus, the thumb melody notes had helpful resonance.

Performance as a whole 21/30

The playing had steady performance control and, in the first half, a sense of involvement. More time
taken at piece-ends would have been beneficial, allowing the moods to settle. There was scope for
considerably more shape and dynamic variety, to develop the interpretations, but awareness of melodic
and accompaniment balance was mostly shown. Technically, there were a number of tonal lapses, with
all pieces requiring more clarity and resonance. However, the majority of notes and rhythms were in
place and the playing of double notes often demonstrated flair and conviction.
