Question.1:

The composite A-36 steel bar shown in Figure below is made from two segments, AB and BD, having cross-
sectional areas of AAB = 600mm2 and ABD=1200mm2. Determine the vertical displacement of end A and
the displacement of B relative to C.

Ans.

Displacement at A = + 0.61 mm

Displacement B/C = +0.104 mm

Question.2:

A rigid plate C is used to transfer a 20-kip load P to a steel (Es = 30,000 ksi) rod A and aluminum alloy (Ea
= 10,000 ksi) pipe B, as shown. The supports at the top of the rod and bottom of the pipe are rigid and there
are no stresses in the rod or pipe before the load P applied. The cross-sectional areas of rod A and Pipe B
are 0.8 in2 and 3.0 in2, respectively. Determine:

• The axial stresses in rod A and pipe B,

• The displacement of plate C
• The reactions

Ans.: Sigma @ A= 15.38 ksi, Sigma @ B = 2.56 ksi, the displacement @ C = 0.00513 in, reactions F1 =
7.68kips and F2 = 12.3 Kips
