Patrick 1
Patrick, being still a somewhat shy young man (this will pass), was hesitant to put himself for-
ward and so it was my pleasure, a couple of years ago, to escort him around the San Diego comic
convention and introduce him and his work to the editors of a halt dozen or so 'alternative' (i.e.
outside the mainstream world of Marvel/DC superhero comics) publishing houses. Several
expressed immediate interest in his work and watched with particular interest as Thierry

I happily noticed, with the air of an editor handling the work of an artist who is not being sent
back to the studio to try again but is instead being readied for publication.
I thinkThe Yellow Jar, the book that resulted from Patrick and Thierry's initial meeting, is a
stellar piece of work and take great pleasure in being here to toast a young artist's inaugural pub-

Introducing the delightfully precise and beautifully designed art of Patrick Atangan in
a new series of adaptations of traditional Asian tales. This book, drawn in ukiyo-e
style, presents The Yellow Jar which centers around a simple fisherman and a beauti-
ful maiden he takes as wife, after finding her in a magic jar. However, she is abducted
by a demon warrior considerably more powerful than the simple fisherman. But the
fisherman's resolve, even after many unsuccessful attempts to rescue her, does not
flinch... In Two Chrysanthemum Maidens, a monk is faced with two rather strange
flowers in his carefully tended garden. They are wild and have planted themselves
there at will. They are weeds but they are lovely like women.
