0.06mm shall be used to ensure free ground water flow if any.
• At steep slopes, the padding material for the upper part of the pipes may consist of excavation
material with a maximum grain size of 50 mm. In both cases, wadi sections and steep slopes,
• Rock shield material of adequate quality shall be placed between pipe and padding material
when grain size of max. 50 mm will be used in order to avoid damage to the coating.
11.14. Backfilling and Compaction

• All the fill materials shall meet the requirements of the contract specification H652-PPL-EPC-
0031-Rev 1
• The fill material shall be placed in layers of not more than 300mm with a compacted layer
thickness not exceeding 250mm where mechanical compactors like vibratory plate / drum
compactors are used.
• Large rocks or stones, rubbish, vegetable growth or other material excavated from the trench
which is unsuitable for backfill, shall not be put back into the trench but shall be collected and
disposed. If further material is required for backfill of the trench suitable material shall be
imported to site. Excavated material and added material have to be treated in such a way that it
shall be of homogenous character The backfill material shall be heaped up along the trench line
to leave a crown of approximately 300 mm above adjacent natural ground level to ensure a total
pipe cover of 1.30 m, unless otherwise specified or required.
• Surplus excavated subsoil, if any, shall be removed from site or spread over the right-of-way on
exposed subsoil. Surplus subsoil shall not be spread on topsoil.
• Backfill material up to 300 mm above pipe crown elevation may have a maximum size of 100
mm and not more than 50 % greater than 50 mm.
• Backfill material which is filled into the trench above 300 mm of the pipe crown until the top of
trench elevation shall be the excavation material with a maximum size of 50 mm. The material
shall be reasonably graded to be able to achieve the required compaction. Material not meeting
the required compaction shall be moisture conditioned and re-compacted. If the required density
is still not achieved the material shall be excavated and replaced with suitable material.
• The thickness of fill material shall not exceed 150 mm where manual compaction is used and
shall be tested.
• Each layer shall be compacted and tested for 95% Modified Proctor Density or 90% Relative
Density at + 2% of Optimum moisture content for “Structural Fill”. In the non-structural area, the
compaction shall be done to the extent of adjacent undisturbed soil.
• The ground water table shall be continuously maintained at least 0.5m below the excavation
bottom and the formation grade until foundations are constructed and backfilled.

• Dewatering system shall be installed if required.

• Discharge of Ground water will be to a place advised by Owner/Engineer. A booster pump will be
used on the discharge line to overcome loss of head. Discharge of ground water arising from
dewatering after obtaining approval from owner/engineer.
• The functional check shall be made by visual monitoring at outlet point at regular intervals. The
decrease in discharge shall indicate the lowered water table. A trial pit of 1 m deep below the
formation level shall be dug at the centre of the foundation to check the water table. Filling
activity shall commence after ensuring the water table below 1 m of formation grade.
• Sub grade / formation levels shall be recorded.
• Trial pit to monitor the water level should be made of any side of the foundation area since it is
required even after placing foundation.
• The standard proctor test shall be used to determine the maximum dry density (MDD).
• The Modified Proctor Density of the fill material shall be established in accordance with ASTM D
698.
• Field density testing in accordance with BS 1377 at a minimum frequency of one test per 5000
m², and as instructed by the NWC.
• Suitable testing methods for determination of field density by sand replacement shall be used
depending on their appropriateness for the prevailing fill to be tested. The proposed testing
method and location shall be subject to the approval of the NWC.
• Arrange to conduct all the necessary tests to the satisfaction of NWC. All such tests shall be
carried out at site laboratory approved by NWC. Results of all tests shall be approved by NWC.
• Backfill material up to a level of 500 mm below the final ROW elevation shall be very gently and
carefully compacted to avoid damage to the pipeline coating, internal lining and prevent
deformations of the pipe . Only small compactors (none vibrating) shall be allowed within this
range, e.g. rammers or tampers. Compaction shall be made in layers not exceeding 300mm. All
material shall be at a moisture content that shall facilitate compaction. For the remaining backfill,
medium size roller compactors may be used, however, vibrating machines shall not be allowed.
• Backfilling works shall be carried out as soon as possible after coating of joints and padding is
complete in order to give the pipe a natural anchorage, avoiding harmful weather impact (rapid
temperature change) and erosion of the trench walls.
• Backfilling of trenches opened at crossings of roadways, pavements or other public areas shall
be carried out immediately after laying the pipeline. All temporary and permanent surface
restorations shall be completed immediately after completion of backfilling works.
• Maximum slope in soil shall be made to suit the material characteristics. Erosion protection
measures preferably by stone pitching and rip rap to prevent scouring shall be implemented
where necessary. Moreover, dams consisting of earth bags or sand sacks, properly spaced,

shall be bound and connected to the natural ground of the trench wall by adequate supports,
where necessary. If necessary diversionary furrows shall also be provided to direct the flow of
water into natural drainage courses and away from the pipeline trench. Movement of fine graded
particles within the trench shall be avoided by provision of geo-textile on the back side of the
sand bag barriers.
• The Backfill material shall follow all specification requirements.
• All the methodology of embankment for pipeline shall meet the requirements of the contract
specification H652-PPL-EPC-0031-Rev 1.
