Prevalence of E-Cigarette Use and Its Associated Factors Among Youths Aged 12 to
16 Years in 68 Countries and Territories: Global Youth Tobacco Survey, 2012–2019
Although official figures on the number of vapers in Singapore are unavailable, there are signs
that youth vaping has become more popular in recent years, especially among younger people. A
study on the prevalence and associated factors of e-cigarette use among adolescents in Southeast
Asia revealed an increasing trend in the use of e-cigarettes among Malaysian adolescents1 .
Additionally, data from the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) indicated a significant rise in the
trend of vaping, with 4,916 people being caught for the offense in 2022, compared to 1,266 in
2020 and 4,697 in 20212. The scholarly article has also shown a general global trend of
increasing vape consumption.

other major parts of their life. Vapes are known to contain harmful chemicals such as fine

detrimental effects on health, especially among adolescents. Vaping will take a toll on the teen’s
physical and mental health, and will also heavily impact his relationships.
The issue of increased youth vaping in Singapore is influenced by several factors. Despite the
ban on vaping, young people are still able to obtain e-cigarettes, leading to a significant rise in
the number of vaping cases3 . The lack of awareness about the potential health risks and the
misconception that vaping is less harmful than smoking have further fueled its prevalence

Parents can play a crucial role in discouraging their children from vaping by maintaining open
dialogues, educating them about the dangers of e-cigarettes, and setting a strong example by not
using tobacco products themselves. Furthermore, The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of
Education can intensify public education campaigns to raise awareness about the health risks of
vaping, targeting both students and parents.
