Teacher’s Fundamental Role in Providing High-Quality Learning

For Students to Overcome The Education Crisis

Yusron Sabiila Haifani (23313034)

“The Education Crisis: Being in School Is Not the Same as Learning” is a

critical article written by Annette Dixon, the World Bank Group’s Vice President
for Human Resources. This article was published on January 22, 2020. This text
emphasizes students' deficiency in fundamental skills as proof that there is a
global learning crisis. In this situation, teachers' roles are vital in bringing about
educational reform. Of course, it also requires support and collaboration from a
number of organizations, including schools and the Ministry of Education. This
reformation consists of hiring competent teachers, integrating technology into the
classroom, and enhancing students' foundational knowledge. The objective is to
provide high-quality education to all students worldwide. I completely concur
with Annette's concerns on the global education crisis, particularly with regard to
how crucial she believes quality teachers are to overcome the education crisis.
Skilled teachers, in my view, are the essential foundation upon which education is
established.
Based on my personal experiences, the teacher plays a major role in
determining how a lesson is conducted. It has to do with how a teacher gives
students high-quality learning. I contrast my divergent experiences with regard to
what a teacher does in the classroom. In the initial situation, the teacher employs
a one-way teaching approach, taking on the role of the content provider. The
primary objective is to thoroughly explain the subject to the students without
giving them any chance to participate actively in the learning process. As a result,
students frequently experience boredom in the classroom setting which causes
less attention to the teacher's explanations and busy with their own activities. The
second condition, on the contrary, places more emphasis on student-centered
learning. By encouraging students to participate actively in discussions, projects,
and other activities, the teacher merely serves as a facilitator. The materials are
presented using points that will be discussed by the students. Students will share
their perspectives on the material presented to make it easier to understand
through active discussion and communication between themselves and their
teachers. In addition to helping students understand concepts, a classroom
environment that allows them to participate creatively in class can help them
develop both hard and soft skills. This is exactly what Annette Dixon said that
teachers are heroes who defy the odds and make learning happen with passion,
creativity, and determination. (Dixon, 2020).
Teachers have a critical role in addressing the educational crisis. It is
highly beneficial for students when a qualified teacher provides innovative and
high-quality learning. A monotonous instructor, on the other hand, would tire
students and create an ineffective learning environment. Students are forced to sit
through class rather than learn anything new. This is known as "being in school is
not the same as learning”. Therefore, to tackle the education crisis, competent
teachers are required to provide high-quality, effective learning environments.
