New Zealand relaxes visa rules to attract more workers

EW Zealand has re-
laxed immigration
rules to attract foreign
workers to address severe
labour shortage.
The measures also include
providing median wage ex-
emptions to crucial sectors
through sector agreements,
temporarily doubling numbers
under the Working Holiday
Scheme and extending visas
to retain labourers who are
already in the country, said
Immigration Minister, Michael
Wood in a statement.
The doubling of Working
Holiday Scheme cap for 2022-
23 will see an extra 12,000
onshore working holiday mak-
ers visas expiring between
August 26, 2022 and May 31,
2023 will be extended for 6
months to keep workers who
are already in the country, and
those who are offshore will
be given more time to travel,
the minister said.
The measures come as
the jobless rate stood at 3.3
per cent in the second quarter.

IETNAM has embarked
on a major tourism and
business promotion cam-
paign to attract Indian tourists
and businesses.
At a recent India-Vietnam
Tourism Promotion Conference
held in Ho Chi Minh City, gov-
ernment officials and industry
representatives from both coun-
tries met to discuss how they
can promote inbound tourism
from India.
Organised by the Consulate
General of India in Ho Chi Minh
City, the meeting was attended
by Pham Van Thuy, Vice Chair-
man of the Vietnam National
Administration of Tourism (VNAT)
and Pranay Verma, Indian Am-
bassador to Vietnam.
Besides leisure travellers,
Vietnam is keen to promote itself
as MICE (meetings, incentives,
conferences, exhibitions) desti-
nation and also as an overseas
wedding venue.
Vietnam has been actively
encouraging Indians to visit the
country through a series of bi-
lateral conferences and other
activities including sponsored
trips for businesses. VNAT is
hoping that these activities will
enable its travel industry to tap
into a market which has a pop-
ulation of 1.4 billion.
According to Tran Phong
Binh, Deputy Director of Tourism
Marketing Department, VNAT,
20 million Indians travel abroad
for holidays every year.
Direct flights between cities
are a key factor to promote travel
as travellers do not usually enjoy
sitting in the airport transit area
of a third country, for hours, wait-
ing for a connecting flight.
At the moment, budget car-
riers Vietjet Air and IndiGo to-
gether operate a dozen or so
direct flights between cities in
South Korea with 4.3 million,
Japan (9,52,000) and Taiwan
(9,26,000).
Vietnam has resumed its pre-
pandemic visa exemption policy
for 13 countries including West-
ern European markets with a
maximum stay of up to 15 days.
For other markets, including In-
dia, it only issues a one-month
single-entry e-visa, instead of
three-month visas like before
the pandemic. Visa on arrival is
also not available to visitors ex-
cept those travelling on busi-
ness.
The e-visa must be applied
for online and can take up to
seven working days to approve.

at the 15th International Olympiad on
Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA).
India held the third position jointly with
Singapore with students winning three
gold and two silver medals. The 15th In-
ternational Olympiad on Astronomy and
Astrophysics 2022 was held in Kutaisi,
Georgia from August 14-21, 2022.
The team was accompanied by two
leaders: Sarita Vig (Indian Institute of
Space Science and Technology, Thiru-
vananthapuram), Ajit Mohan Srivastava
(Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar) and
two scientific observers: Shriharsh Ten-
dulkar (Tata Institute of Fundamental Re-
search, Mumbai) and Tejas Shah (Fr.
Agnel Multipurpose School & Jr. College,
Navi Mumbai).
Mr Tendulkar was himself a gold medal-
list at the International Astronomy Olympiad
in 2002 and 2003 (overall topper in the
latter). There were 209 students from 37
main and six guest teams participating in
this year's IOAA. In addition, 24 students
from six countries participated in the online
mode. This year's competition was origi-
nally scheduled to be held in Kyiv, Ukraine,
it was shifted to Kutaisi, Georgia in March
2022 due to the war in Ukraine.
In the medals tally, India was placed
jointly in the third position along with Sin-
gapore, behind Iran's official team (5
golds) and guest team (4 golds, 1 silver).
In all, 28 gold, 38 silver and 55 bronze
medals were awarded at this IOAA.
