our language as it continually borrows words from other languages,
similar to English language. Then ask students the following

Presentation (10 minutes)

Teacher introduces to the students the following:

1. The main purpose of a concept paper is to clarify the meaning


of a concept (Saqueton, G. and Uychoco, M. (2016). EAPP. Manila:
Rex)
2. A definition usually forms the core of a concept paper.
3. The definition may consist of the original meaning of the
term/concept, especially one of foreign borrowing, and the
modifications on its original meaning.
4. The later and present-day uses of the word clarify the
concept further.

Details:
1. Borrowed from the Tagalog word, bundok, meaning
mountain, the word now refers to any rough country, with
the letter –s added to make it refer to locations.
2. Boonies became the slang equivalent of boondocks.
3. Earlier used by the US servicemen during the world war to
refer to the remote swampy areas used for training; it later
referred to distant, rural areas.
4. Boondockers, a derivative, are shoes suitable for rough
terrain.

Mini Concept Paper

Teacher emphasizes that the short text read is a mini concept


paper that consists of a core definition clarifying the meaning of the
term, boondocks, and the expansion of this core definition.

Pair Work (15 minutes)

Teacher projects or posts on the board some techniques in


writing sentence definition. Students will be asked to identify how
the sentence definition was written and developed to form a
paragraph. In addition, students will be asked to write their
justification in selecting the technique.

included in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). Write a brief
paragraph narrating your mini-story. Start with the word’s original
use in Filipino, its new coined forms, if any, the probable reason for
its having been included in the OED (when other words have not),
and end the paragraph with its new meanings found in the OED. You
may search the OED on line for the definition of the word you chose.
