2023 YSEALI Enviro-Tech Regional Workshop

Scope of Work for Mentor

Project Background
Southeast Asia is a region of high diversity but has a shared risk, being among the world's most at-risk
regions when it comes to climate change. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that
the region is facing rising sea levels, heat waves, droughts, and increasingly intense rainstorms. Other issues
include pollution (in oceans and on land), high reliance on non-renewable energy sources, and loss of
biodiversity and other natural resources. Environmental issues are closely connected to social and economic
issues. The socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has created new challenges in this context.
National government policies and commitments are gradually focusing more on concrete climate change
action and the protection of environmental resources. Organizations such as the UN’s Global Compact
Network are working with corporates to accelerate action, and Environmental, Social, and Governance
(ESG) reporting requirements are increasing the pressure. Individual countries are implementing particular
strategies to address goals and achieve SDG target commitments.
Kenan Foundation Asia has designed a comprehensive agenda for the YSEALI Enviro-Tech Regional
Workshop to enable participants to expand their knowledge of environmental technology and
entrepreneurship to address sustainability issues and enhance their abilities to serve as leaders at the
community, national, regional, and global levels. Through experiential learning activities and extensive
cross-sector networking, participants will gain knowledge, skills, and connections to launch new, dynamic
partnerships that protect the environment and mitigate climate change.

The Program has the following objectives.

Goal: Empower a new generation of young leaders in ASEAN and Timor-Leste to apply innovative
technology solutions to address climate change and environmental issues in the region

Objectives:
1. Build knowledge and skills of young leaders on the application of new technologies, including
digital technologies in protecting the environment and mitigating climate change, and understanding
sustainability in a wide range of contexts (systems thinking)

different roles, such as policymakers, activists, CSO leaders, educators, or social entrepreneurs
3. Cultivate sustained regional connections, focused on working towards common solutions to promote
environmental protection
