Web force measurement with electronic amplifier CV 2201

1. General
Instructions
1.1 Key to symbols  performing operations
important additional information and remarks
sections worthy of special note to guarantee safe operation
of the amplifier CV 2201.

1.2 Description Look after this description carefully and make sure it is available to
the personnel at all times.
This description is integral part of the delivery. It should be read care-
fully before performing any job whatsoever on the equipment, be it
for mounting, operating or maintenance.
All activities and jobs may be performed by specialized personnel
only or by personnel especially trained for that purpose.

1.3 Safety instructions Never insert your hand or tools between turning rollers.

Never touch the edges of moving webs.

2. Function Amplifier CV 2201 is an integral part of the E+L web force measur-
ing unit. It amplifies the signal voltage emitted by the PD 2... load cell
(maximum two cells), the magnitude of which changes in proportion
to the web force.
Input signals from 0 to ±20 mV are amplified to an output signal of
0 to ±10 V (0 to 20 mA or 4 to 20 mA).
Only use amplifier CV 2201
- when in a perfect technical condition
- according to its intended usage,
- in compliance with the description.

3. Mounting Please observe the locally applicable and customary safety

and accident prevention regulations.
 Mount the amplifier CV 2201 as near as possible to the load cells.

Page 2
Web force measurement with electronic amplifier CV 2201

4. Installation Please observe the locally applicable safety regulations.

 Connect the electrical leads according to the attached circuit dia-

gram and observe the cross-section and screening instructions
quoted therein.
 Run signal lines separately from disturbing or power lines
(e.g. motor lines) and connect them directly to the amplifier with-
out intermediate terminals.
 Make sure that the signal line screening is only grounded at the
amplifier.
White or black/white cores within the leads of E+L products act as
operating mass.

5. Commissioning Please observe the following instructions when commissioning your

web force measuring unit:
The measuring rollers must be free from mechanical strains
and easy-running.
 Check that the operating voltage is correct and that the operation-
al state indicator shines.
In conjunction with safety barriers, the bridge supply voltage
UB must be set from 10 V DC to maximum (right stop) using
potentiometer R 40 (see fig. below).

Amplifier CV 2201, front view  Connect a digital voltmeter with a measuring range of 15 V DC to
the terminals for the output voltage Udirect
 Set the amplification range switch (S 11) to position "2". See figure
above.
R 41 Rough tare
compensation  Then compensate the tare of the amplifier. This is to eliminate
R 42 Precision tare comp. external interferences which might influence the measuring
R 43 Amplification result, for example the roller weight.
There is still no web on the measuring roller. Using the potentio-
meters (R 41) for rough and (R 42) for fine adjustments, set the
output voltage as near as possible to 0.0 V or at least to less than
0.05 V.

5.1 Calibrating the amplifier The amplifier may be calibrated with or without a test weight.
CV 2201 We suggest using a test weight as the results are much more
precise.
Calibration without a test weight is impossible in conjunction
with safety barriers or load cells type PD 15.. and PD 25.. .
The resultant web force in the measuring direction should not exceed
by much the nominal measuring force of the load cell to make sure
that the individual load cells still operate within the linear range when
web force distribution is asymmetrical.

Page 4
Web force measurement with electronic amplifier CV 2201

5.1.1 Setting amplification with  Ascertain the maximum web force. The later has been determined
a test weight at the project planning stage. If not, it must be ascertained empiri-
cally.
 Place a strip of material over the measuring roller in the way the
web will lie afterwards (see fig. on left). Attach a test weight to the
Material strip of material representing the max. web force expected.
Measuring
roller  Now measure the signal voltage of the load cell at the input of the
amplifier.
If the signal voltage of the load cell is greater than 15 mV, the
load cell is overloaded. Either change the angle of wrap or the
measuring direction.
Amplifier  Set amplification using the "amplification" potentiometer (R 43).
CV 2201 Test See figure page 4. Turn to the right to increase the factor of ampli-
weight
fication
Calibrating the amplifier If the test weight is equivalent of the maximum web force, the sig-
nal voltage of the load cell must be amplified to an output voltage
Udirect of 10 V.
If a smaller test weight is used, the output voltage must accord-
ingly be lower.
Example:
If the maximum web force to be measured is 1000 N and if the
test weight acting on the measuring roller has 750 N, the output
voltage Udirect must be 7.5 V.
The corresponding equation is:

Test weight force (N) x 10 Volt (V)

Output voltage Udirect = maximum web force (N)

If the required output voltage Udirect cannot be obtained, change

the amplification range (S 11). See figure page 4. If the output
voltage is too low, set the amplification range to "0"; if the amplifi-
cation range is too big, set range to "1" or "3".
If it is still impossible to get the required output voltage Udirect,

without a test weight
Calibration without a test weight is impossible in conjunc-
tion with safety barriers or with load cells type PD 15.. and
PD 25.. .
Use the "reference voltage" key (S 10) to supply a reference
voltage to the amplifier input and thus set the amplification range.
See figure to the left above.
 Establish the maximum web fore F at which the output voltage
S 10 Reference voltage Udirect should equal 10 V.
The above is established at the project planning stage. If not, the
web force must be ascertained empirically.

Amplifier CV 2201, front view

Page 5

 Calculate the resultant force in the measuring direction FR using

the following equations:

Web force F

F1 = F x cos α
F2 = F x cos β
FR = F1 + F2 F
FR
α
Measuring direction
F2 F1 F2
FN
V= x 1000
FR β

F = web force (N)

F1 = web force component F in measuring direction (N)
F2 = web force component F in measuring direction (N)
FR = resultant web force in measuring direction (N)
V = amplification factor Web force F

Calculating resultant web force

 Then calculate the output voltage Udirect using the following equa-
tion:
Udirect = output voltage (V)
FN FN = nominal measuring force (N), specified on
Udirect = x 10 V load cells, when measuring on two sides,
FR add both nominal measuring forces
FR = resultant web force (N)

 Set the "reference voltage" key (S 10) to the appropriate value.

The key must be kept activated during setting.
R 43 Amplification  Set the calculated output voltage using the "amplification" poten-
tiometer (R 43). Increase the amplification factor by turning clock-
S 10 Reference voltage
wise.
If the required output voltage cannot be obtained, change the am-
plification range (S 11). See figure on top of page 4. If the output
voltage is too low, set the amplification range to "0"; if the output
voltage is too big, set amplification range to "1" or "3".
Amplifier CV 2201, front view Calibration of the amplifier is thus complete.

5.2 Amplifier CV 2201 outputs The web force is available in three different signal forms:
- direct output Udirect (0 to ±10 V/10 mA, rise time 5 ms)
The direct output is used for the rapid acquisition of measured
values and for downstream control loops.
- filter output Ufilter (0 to ±10 V/10 mA)
The filter output may be used for display instruments.

Page 6

- Current output I (0 to 20 mA or 4 to 20 mA, rise time 5 ms)

The fail-safe current output is recommended for long distance
transfers of measured values. Use slide switch S 2 (see fig. be-
low) to select which current shall be supplied to the output.
Slide switch in position 1 4 to 20 mA
Slide switch in position 2 0 to 20 mA (works setting)
Make sure that the burden (shunt) does not exceed
600 Ohms!
The current output is activated only when there is a positive volt-
1 age at the input of the amplifier.
2 S2 In case your load cells emit a negative signal voltage, exchange
the connections of the bridge supply voltage +UB and -UB against
each other.
