Definition of a Wetland
ans. Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil, or is present either at or near the surface of the
soil all year or for varying periods of time during the year, including during the growing season.

ans. Wetlands are highly productive and biologically diverse systems that enhance water quality,
control erosion, maintain stream flows, sequester carbon, and provide a home to at least one third of
all threatened and endangered species.

Wetlands are important because they:

improve water quality


provide wildlife habitat
maintain ecosystem productivity
reduce coastal storm damage
provide recreational opportunities
improve the water supply
provide opportunities for education

3 . As of 16 Apr 2024, there is no information available on the number of wetlands in Madhya Pradesh.1
However, the state has identified wetlands for conservation and has sent a list of up to 120 wetlands to
the Union government to be included in the rejuvenation program for conservation under the National
Program for Conservation of Aquatic Eco-system (NPCA). The Bhoj Wetland is located in Madhya
Pradesh and is under Ramsar sites in India.2 The State Wetland Authority of Madhya Pradesh (MPSWA)
has been constituted with the Minister of Environment, GoMP as the Chairperson, Chief Secretary to
Government of MP as the Vice Chairperson, and Secretaries of the stakeholders department as
ex-officio members.0
