Look at the expressions from the recording with your partner and using the context, try to guess the
meaning of each one. Then, to help you remember the language, have a chat with your partner, and
use them to talk about your life.
• ...Finland would be super expensive, but I saved up for months and was ready for the trip of a lifetime.
• ... It was delicious especially when I washed it down with a couple of glasses of traditionally-served
lonkero.
Let’s chat.
1. How would you describe the trip of a lifetime? Where would you go? What would you do? Who
would you be with?

You are going to read about a trip around Helsinki. Match the following paragraph titles (A-F) to the
article on page six. One answer is not needed.
1. Santa’s friends
3. Painless travelling
5. Spotless swimming
VISITING FINLAND
A.
Helsinki is a beautiful capital city and one that is no doubt worth your time, however, Helsinki is also the perfect
base for the one-day trip - a trip in which you can see something new but without the pain of the packing and the
travelling that often goes along with it. There is a wide selection of one-day trips that you can go on from Helsinki
and hopefully a couple of these will catch your eye.
B.
How about starting off with a little bit of history and a trip to Porvoo, the second-oldest city in Finland? Only 40
minutes away from Helsinki by car, Porvoo is most famous for its "old town" which is made up of winding medieval
alleyways and intriguing wooden houses. Make sure you check out Porvoo Cathedral which is an incredibly cute,
gothic structure and has been pleasing visitors to the city since the 15th century.
C.
If you see yourself as more of a nature lover, then how about a day spent amongst Santa’s reindeer? Nuuksio
Reindeer Park is full of animals that originally came from Finnish Lapland. The chance to see these glorious beasts
from the home of Father Christmas should be jumped at. The reindeer in the park are actually tame and allow you
to pet them freely, making it a perfect day trip for young families.
D.
In 2021, the park welcomed a new addition, a stunning little white reindeer which is so rare in the wild that it is
believed to bring good luck to the herd. With all the time you are spending in the Finnish fresh air you are likely to
be feeling a little hungry and luckily the park has an unusual restaurant experience. The White Reindeer Teepee
Restaurant allows you to sit around an open fire with other guests and get stuck into some traditional Finnish
cuisine while the flames glow brightly.
E.
Quite amazingly there is a day trip from Helsinki which allows you to visit a different country and this trip is
certainly worth your while. All you need to do is jump on a boat and sail across the Gulf of Finland where on the
other side, the Estonian capital of Tallinn awaits you.
F.
Perhaps it makes sense to spend the final evening of your trip in Helsinki itself. If that is the case, then why not
try out a traditional Finnish sauna experience at Kotiharjun which is one of the last saunas in the country to use a
burning stove. It takes five hours to prepare, but the effects it has on the body and soul are praised by both locals
and tourists alike, hopefully by the time you’ve tried it out you will be saying the same thing.
VISITING FINLAND
8 Talking points
1. Do you know anybody who has been to Finland? If not, would you like to go there in the future?
2. What was the most interesting thing that you read in the article?
3. Which of the day trips would you really like to try? Why?
4. Have you ever been on a day trip before? Did you enjoy it?
5. What day trips can you go on from your city?
6. Now you have learnt more about Finland, what would you say are the main similarities and differences
between it and your own country?
Look at the article one more time, find synonyms for the words below and then ask your partner the
questions that follow.
VISITING FINLAND
Look at the two texts below, each one is about a winter activity you can try in Finland. Try to complete
each one with the vocabulary in the box.
Once you have read your text you must then summarise your paragraph for your partner.
When you are summarising it, try and use different vocabulary, as this will develop your ability to
paraphrase.
A. Ice hotel
The idea of an ice hotel might leave you feeling cold but there are many people who have loved
1
the experience and maybe you should give it a go too. Ice hotels are with just
2
ten around the world. The Snow Village in Finland is the biggest ice hotel in the
3
world, and it is near the city of Kittila.
The hotel itself is great for couples and families as it has rooms with up to five beds, perfect for
4 5
together in those temperatures. Within the hotel there is an ice
6
bar, ice cinema and even an ice should you feel the need to get married while
you are there. The hotel also has two warm areas should all that ice and freezing cold become too
much for you.
VISITING FINLAND
B. Husky sledding
Husky sledding is a popular activity for tourists who visit Finland but it is an experience that is not
1
easily . If it sounds like your kind of thing, then you can sign up for a husky
2
which will allow you to explore Finnish Lapland while being pulled along by these
3
animals.
4
The safaris can last for three days and take you through some stunning and
5
scenery. We took 24 dogs with us and throughout the whole run they seemed
and happy to be out in the countryside running as fast as their legs could take them. When we
6
finally returned to camp, I think I was more tired than the dogs but a little was
more than worth it.
1. What do you think about the Ice Hotel? Would you like to spend a few days there?
2. Do you think you would like to be pulled along by a team of huskies? How do you think it would
feel?
