Remarkable Reading
This week we will read a final
book about how humans can
advocate for birds. We’re also
having fun watching short
videos about real-life bird
rescues and researching birds
to write our own “Mystery Bird
Riddles.
We will read some special
books about mothers as we
celebrate Mother’s Day, and
we will continue reading a
chapter book called The One
and Only Ivan.
Wonderful Writing
Each Monday, we will write
in our journals about our
weekends. We will work
toward including an
opening sentence, 2-3
events with details, a closing
sentence, and an illustration
to match.
This week we will also write
to share what we are
learning about birds, we will
write about our mothers,
and we will finish our
PUBLISHING PARTY BOOKS!
Marvelous Math
This week we will continue a
unit on time and money. We
will practice counting coins to
one dollar and telling time to
the hour and half-hour.
Counting coins is a great skill
to practice at home!
We continue to solve rigorous
word problems and equations
with missing parts, and we are
practicing addition strategies
with double-digit numbers.
Phonics
This week we will learn to read
and spell words with both the
short and long “oo” sounds. The
short sound is “oo” as in “good”
or “cook.” The long sound is a
review of last week – “oo” as in
“room” or “shoot.” We will
practice all week and have a
spelling test on Friday.
This week’s sight words are:
look, good, would,
could, should
Teacher Notes
We had another great week
in 1st grade!
*I did not assign snack
weeks for May. We have
leftovers for the next
couple of days and then
anyone is welcome to send in
snacks for the rest of May.
*Please be sure that your
child brings a water bottle
to school each day.
*Please have your child wear
tennis shoes on Thursdays
and Fridays for P.E.

Science/Social Studies
We will spend our Social
Studies and Science time
this week working on our
Publishing Party books
and doing bird research as
we write “Mystery Bird
Riddles.”
