RECALL

Yesterday, we discussed about a visual

representation of motion specifically motion
graphs, right? Yes, Ma’am.

Now, I will be asking you some questions to recall

your understanding before we proceed with our
lesson for today.

 What are the types of motion graphs? Distance-time graph, displacement-time

Very good, class! It seems that you have a good
grasp of the lesson yesterday. Now as we move
on to our next topic, let’s have a quick activity.

II. LESSON PROPER

A. ENGAGE

“Jigsaw Puzzle”

To start with, do you know what a jigsaw puzzle is, Yes, Ma’am.
class?

Okay, that’s good because you are going to solve

one today.

In this activity, you are to assemble big pieces of

the puzzle to form a picture. Random students will
be called to stick the pieces on the board
according to its proper place.

Is the instruction clear, class? Yes, Ma’am.

Okay, who would like to start with the first piece? (Students will raise their hand to volunteer.)
And so on…

Very good!

PROCESSING QUESTIONS:

gravity. Today, we will learn about the free fall
motion as we go on with our session.

B. EXPLORE

“Let’s Team Up!”

Now as we move on to our lesson, let’s have

another activity entitled “Let’s Team Up!”

In this activity, you have to team up with your

groupmates in defining free fall motion and
providing one (1) example scenario that you can
think of.

Thank you! Please settle down now as I will be

asking questions for you to answer.

PROCESSING QUESTION:

 In simple words, what is free fall motion? Free fall motion is defined as a situation
when a body or an object is moving only
under the influence of the earth’s gravity.

Exactly!

A free falling object is an object that is falling under

the sole influence of gravity. Any object that is
being acted upon only by the force of gravity is
said to be in a state of free fall.

5
All free-falling objects (on Earth) accelerate
downwards at a rate of 9.8 m/s2. It is the constant
acceleration of objects due to gravity.

The motion of an object in free fall can be

described by four kinematic equations. The
kinematic equations that describe any object's
motion are:

The asterisk (*) is another sign for multiplication

class, as well as the open and close parenthesis
().

The symbols in the above equation have a specific

meaning:

 The symbol d stands for the displacement;

 The symbol t stands for the time;
 The symbol a stands for
the acceleration of the object;
 The symbol vi stands for the initial
velocity value;
 And the symbol vf stands for the final
velocity.

Can you follow, class? Yes, Ma’am.

Now, these are the concepts that we need to take

note before we solve sample problems.

 An object in free fall experiences an

acceleration of -9.8 m/s2. (The - sign
indicates a downward acceleration.)
 If an object is merely dropped (as opposed
to being thrown) from an elevated height,
then the initial velocity of the object is 0 m/s.

Are you ready to solve problems, class? Yes, Ma’am.

Okay, let’s start with Example 1.

A ball is dropped from rest on a cliff. What is the

velocity of the ball 5 seconds later?

6
First, let’s determine the given values:

Given:

Vi = 0 m/s
a = -9.8 m/s2
d = not given
t=5s
Vf = ?

Since displacement was not given, let’s choose a

formula that does not require us to provide the
displacement but we will be able to calculate for
the final velocity.

So, our formula should be:

Vf = Vi + a * t

Now, let’s substitute!

Vf = 0 m/s + (-9.8 m/s2) (5s)

Vf = -49 m/s

Do you have any questions, class? None so far, Ma’am.

Okay, let’s proceed with Example 2.

A rock is released from rest on a 700m building. (Students will raise their hand.)
How long does it take to hit the ground?
(A student will go in front to answer the
Who wants to try? Don’t worry, I’ll help. problem on the board.)

Please come in front. Given:

Vi = 0 m/s
a = -9.8 m/s2
Now, start with writing the given values. t=?
Vf = not given
Displacement should be negative because the d = -700 m
rock is moving downwards. The 700 m value given
on the problem is the distance hence, it’s positive. Formula:
Distance and displacement will have the same d = Vi * t + ½ * a * t2
value but different signs.
- 700 m = 0 m/s + t + ½ (-9.8 m/s2) t2
Let’s choose the appropriate formula that we will - 700 m = (- 4.9 m/s2) t2
use. Since the final velocity was not given, let’s - 700 m = (- 4.9 m/s2) t2
choose a formula that does not require to us to - 4.9 m/s2 - 4.9 m/s2
provide it.
- 700 m = t2
Substitute then calculate. - 4.9 m/s2

7
We need to isolate the t2 since we are looking for 142.86 s2 = t2
the time so we have to divide both sides with - 4.9 √142.86 𝑠2 = √t2
m/s2. 11.95 s = t
t = 11.95 s
Then, we take the square root.

Did you understand, class? Yes, Ma’am.

D. ELABORATE

“Let’s Solve!”

At this point, since you already acquired significant

information about describing the motion of free
falling objects in one direction specifically
downwards.

Let’s have an activity entitled “Let’s Solve!”. Get 1

whole sheet of paper. Write your name, grade
level and section as well as the date of today.

Instruction: Solve the following problem using the

appropriate kinematic equation. Follow the proper
steps discussed earlier.

Is the instruction clear, class? Yes, Ma’am.

Problem. A stone is dropped from rest. It reached

the ground 6 seconds later. What is the velocity of
the stone just before it hits the ground?

You will be given 5 minutes to finish this task.

Analyze the problem carefully, class.

Your timer starts now! (Students will start working.)

Given:
Vi = 0 m/s
a = -9.8 m/s2
t=6s
d = not given
Vf = ?

Formula:
Vf = Vi + a * t

Vf = 0 m/s + (-9.8 m/s2) (6 s)

Vf = 0 m/s + (-58.8 m/s)
Vf = -58.8 m/s

8
Time is up!

Please pass your papers in front then on the (Students will submit their papers as
center aisle. instructed.)
