Simunul is a municipality located in the province of Tawi-Tawi, which is an archipelagic

province in the southernmost part of the Philippines. It is the southernmost municipality in the

country. It is a small island municipality situated in the Sulu Sea, and it is known as the site of

the first mosque in the Philippines.In the early 14th century, an Arab missionary named Karimul

Makhdum arrived in the area and introduced Islam to the locals. He built the first mosque in the

Philippines on Simunul Island, which is now known as the Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Mosque.so

islam religion spread more throughout the region and Simunul became an important center of

Islamic learning and culture. The mosque was used as a center for religious and cultural

activities, and it served as a hub for the spread of Islam to other parts of the Philippines. So the

people in the simunul their beliefs in god can't be taken cause in all cultural doings they do they

never forget their beliefs in god so 24/7 people stay in mosque to pray and to strengthen the

iman of islam
The Municipality of Tandubas, province of Tawi-Tawi is the home of rainbow mat weavers and

is one of the main producers of colorful handicrafts made from Pandan leaves which grow

abundantly in the coastal areas. These leaves are harvested and undertake several processes

(cutting, removing thorns, soaking, cooking, dying and drying) and innovated before it can

produce the stunning products.The mat-weaving is an important facet of the cultural identity of

Indigenous Communities of Tandubas.


With lively cultures Sibutu population is predominantly of Sama tribe which is considered

as peace-loving people. The main source of livelihood is seaweed farming, fishing and trading.

Sama Sibutu belong to the Datu class or the Royal of Tawi-Tawi. As of the manner of dressing,

women wear samra blouses while men weasawwal (long, loose pants) and badju kuput (tight

fitting blouse with tadjung (wrap-around) is also part of the wardrobe. They also aly make up

like atal (lipstick) and baddak (rice powder). During special occasions, women wear jewelries.
Far from the mainstream of development, Sitangkai strives to make both ends meet in a place

where water is available from the beneficent sky. People are industrious and quite determined in

shaping their future amidst the scarce resources that make up the confort and convenience of

cities and other urban areas. It is a life that looks forward to building the bridge into the

future.Mat-weaving is a traditional home industry for women. Made of thin strips of pandan

leaves, trained hand gets to work for the intricate design.
