THE IMPACT OF COLONIALISM ON AFRICAN SOCIETIES AND

INDIVIDUALS AS DEPICTED IN THE NOVEL “THINGS FALL APART.”

1.0. INTRODUCTION
Colonialism had a big impact on African societies and its people. However, this is
shown in the Novel “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe where he demonstrated
how the European colonization affected African countries and its societies for
instance, Nigeria as well as its people like the main character Okonkwo. Therefore,
this research study will aim at analyzing the impact or effects of the European
colonization on African societies and its ongoing effects to its people.
1.1. AIM
The aim of the title is to analyze the impact of colonialism on African societies and
individuals as depicted in Chinua Achebe’s novel, “ Things Fall Apart.”
1.2 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
i. To analyze the social, political, economical and cultural changes brought about by
the European colonizers and its ongoing effects on African societies as depicted in
“Things Fall Apart.”
ii. To examine the effects of colonization on individuals like Okonkwo and other
characters as depicted in “ Things Fall Apart.”
1.3. LIMITATION
Time limited; As a researcher, i spent a lot of time working on the first title proposed
but it was rejected. This meant that, I had less time to work on the new title and write
the proposal. However, I had to hurry to finish the new research proposal (position
paper) , so I could not spend as much time as I wanted on it.
1.4. METHODOLOGY
Literary analysis (close reading ) of the novel “Things Fall Apart” and Comparative
analysis of “Things Fall Apart” to other literary woks will be used as a method for
studying the impact of colonialism on African societies and individuals in order to
identify how colonialism has had impacted African societies and how characters were
affected by colonialism.
1.5. LITERATURE REVIEW
The literature review to be used will be the analysis of other African novels written by
African scholars. And the literature review will be as follows:

Aime Cesaire (1950). “Discourse on Colonialism.”
Orgot Grace (1968). “ The Green Leaves.”

1.6. CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the research study will aim at analyzing the effects of colonialism on
African societies taking into account the changes brought about by the European
colonization and how individuals were affected by such changes. In addition, the
research report will gather the data by close reading of the novel “ Things Fall Apart
“ and will use other African literally works as literature review.
