A] Answer these questions:
1. Who was Mini?
Ans: Mini was a little girl who was Kabuliwallah’s best friend.
2. What could she cannot live without? How did her parents react to this?
Ans: She cannot live without talking. Her mother got irritated while her father
always enjoyed her talks.
3. Describe Kabuliwallah.
Ans: Kabuliwallah wore the loose , soiled clothing of his people, with a tall
turban; there was a bag on his back, and he carried boxes of grapes in his hands.
4. Describe the first meeting of Kabuliwallah and Mini?
Ans: Mini was standing by her father chair and looked at Kabuliwallah and his
bag. He offered her nuts and raisins , but she was not tempted and only clung
closer to her father. That was their first meeting.
5. Why does the narrator describe his wife as a timid lady?
Ans: The narrator describe his wife as a timid lady because whenever she hears
a noise in the street , or sees people people coming towards the house , she
always jumped to the conclusion that they are either thieves ,or drunkards, or
snakes, or tigers, or malaria, or cockroaches, or caterpillars.
6. Why was Rahmun arrested?
Ans: a certain neighbour had owned the Kabuliwallah for a Rampuri shawl, but
had falsely denied having bought it, and that in the course of the quarrel
Rahmun had struck him so he was arrested.
7. What was the narrator’s reaction on seeing Kabuliwallah upon his release?
Ans: The narrator’s heart shrank within itself when he realized that he had been
released a day before.

B] Answer the following with reference to the context.


1. The Kabuliwallah had overcome the child’s first terror by a judicious bribery
of nuts and almonds, and the two were now great friends.
a) Who was the child?
Ans: Mini was the child.
b) What was the child’s fear?
Ans: The child’s fear was his bag because she had a blind belief that inside the
bag there were perhaps two or three other children like herself.
c) What happened as a result of the bribes that the Kabuliwallah gave the child?
Ans: Mini and Kabuliwallah became friends as a result of the bribes that the
Kabuliwallah gave the child.

2. ‘Are you going to the father-in-law’s house?’


a) Who said these words and to whom?
Ans: Mini said these words to Kabuliwallah.
b) Where was the person being spoken to being led to ?
Ans: The person was being led to jail.
c) What was the significance of these words in this situation?
Ans: Mini said these words in a light mood because she was not aware of the
real situation.

3. At first I did not recognize him. He had no bag , nor the long hair, nor the
same vigour that he used to have. But he smiled , and I knew him again.
a) Who is I in these lines?
Ans The author is I in these lines.
b) Whom did the person not recognize and why?
Ans: The person did not recognize Kabuliwalla because his appearance has
changed and he was not carrying his bag.
c) When did the person recognize ‘him’?
Ans: When Kabuliwalla smiled the person recognized him.
