Sometimes in our lives, we need to get out
from our comfort zone (pointing to the Students: Agree (nod head)

Let’s all read: All: Students read.
At the end of the lesson, we can:
(Listen to the students attentively) 1) understand thoroughly the principles and

Students D: Just repeat what they said.

Say: All right, thank you for your

participation.

VI. Say: Some of you have the idea about our

ABSTRACTION lesson. But let’s get to know more about it to (Students listen)
avoid confusion and be able to use them
effectively. Let us define and understand the (Students raise their hands.)
terms. Who wants to read?
Speech – The ability to talk, the activity of Student A: Speech – The ability to talk, the
talking, or a piece of spoken language activity of talking, or a piece of spoken
(Cambridge Dictionary) language.

Say: Thank you. Speech is simply means

“speaking” like what I am doing now. (Students listen)
Whenever you produce a word to talk, it is
called speech.

Say: Let’s tackle the 2 forms of narrating

someone’s speech. The first one is:

Direct speech
Requesting the students from the left column (Students in the left column read.)
to read.
Direct Speech:
- is a representation of the actual words
someone said.
- We use direct speech when we
simply repeat what someone says by (Students listen.)
putting the phrase/sentences in the
quotation mark.
Say: Thank you for reading.
Here are some examples: (Show the slide)
1st and 2nd row please read number 1, the
3rd and 4th row read number 2, and row 5
to the last read the number 3.
1.
Emma says, “The steak looks
yummy.” (Students in the first and second row read.)

2.

Timmy says, “The food tastes (Students in the third and fourth row read.)
delicious.”

3.
Timmy says, “I like (Students in the fifth to the last row read.)
tomatoes.”

Say: What can you observe from the given

examples? Students: They have quotation marks.

Say: Very good observation! As you can see, (Students listen)

all the phrases that are inside the quotation
marks are the exact words being said. They
are also called quoted speech.
Take note: The direct speech has the Students: Quotation mark.
_______?

Say: Now let’s discuss the indirect or also

known as reported speech. What is indirect
or reported speech? Requesting all the
students from the right column to read.

Indirect speech (Students in the right column read.)

- or also known as reported speech is
the act of reporting something that
was said, but not using exactly the
same words.
- When we want to report what
someone said without using (“…”)
quotation marks or the necessary (Students listen attentively.)
terms used is a reported speech.

Say: Thank you. Here are some examples:

Requesting the 1st and 2nd row to read
number 1, the 3rd and 4th row to read number
2, and row 5 to the last to read the number 3.
1.

Emma says that the steak looks (Students in the first and second row read.)
yummy.

2.
Timmy says that the food tastes (Students in the third and fourth row read.)
delicious.

3.
Timmy says that he likes (Students in the fifth to the last row read.)
tomatoes.

Say: What can you observe from the

sentences? Students: No quotation marks.

Say: That’s right! No more quotation marks. (Students listen attentively)

Take note, if you are relaying what someone
said without quoting his/her exact words but
not distorting its message, we call it “indirect
speech or reported speech.” You can use Students: Yes, ma’am.
other terms as long as the perfect thought is
being relayed. Understand?

Say: Do you have any questions/clarification

about the direct and indirect/reported Students: No, ma’am.
speech?

Say: Now, let’s go to the conversion. How to

convert the direct speech into indirect speech (Students listen attentively)
and vice versa?
Listen carefully. In converting an indirect
speech into direct speech, we need to
consider the subject/pronoun and the tense.
Here are the basic rules.
Rule #1. Requesting everyone to stand up
and raise your arms while reading. (Students stand up and read while raising
their arms)
Rule #1. When we report what someone says
in the present simple tense we don’t
normally change the tense but we simply
Say: Example (show the picture). change the subject.

Say: Observe the sentences. What do you

see? Students: The quotation marks were
removed and there’s additional “that” before
the supposedly quoted sentence.
Say: Very good observation. The “that” is
called, reporting clause. Here are more (Students listen attentively)
examples (show the slide). Students in the
first, second and third row read number 1
and students in the fourth, fifth to the last
row read number 2.

(Students in the first, second and third row

read)
Timmy says “I like tomatoes.”
Timmy says that he likes tomatoes.

(Students in the fourth, fifth to the last row

read)
Emma says, “You also like ketchup.”
Emma says that he also likes ketchup.

Students: The “I” and “you” are changed

Say: What happened to the pronouns?
into “he”.

Say: Good job! However, we have to take

(Students listen)
note that the change of the pronoun depends
on the gender of the speaker. Another thing
to observe. Everybody please read (show the
slide).

Students:
Jimmy says, “they are good for losing
weight.”
Jimmy says that they are good for losing
weight.
Nick says, “She will try it again tomorrow.”
Nick says that she will try it again tomorrow.

Say: What do you observe? Students: The pronoun remains.

Say: Very good. Now, here’s another rule. Students: pay attention
Rule #2. If the subject/pronoun is in 3rd
person no need to change them. Look at the
chart below for your reference.
Direct Speech Indirect Speech Students: Answer
I He/she DS = Emma says, “I want to go to the zoo.”
We They IS = Emma says that she wants to go to the
You He/she/they zoo.
He/she/it He/she/it DS = Bill says, “It is going to rain.”
They They IS = Bill says that it is going to rain
Say: Let’s have a try. DS = Miranda says, “You didn’t hear the
report.”
IS = Miranda says that they didn’t hear the
report.

Say: “I” = refers to Emma. That’s why in Student: Listen attentively.

reported speech we use “she.”
“You” here must be referring to all of them.
That’s why we use “they” in the indirect
speech.
“It” is a third person and according to the
rule, we don’t need to change it.
Take note: First person and second person is
to be changed according to the gender of the
speaker. The third person remains.

Say: Rule #3. When we report things in the

past, we usually change the tense by moving
it 1 step back. How? Example: All the
students from the left column please read. Students in the left column read.
 She said that her friends were happy.

 She said that she was doing her

homework.

Students: In the direct speech it is in present

Say: The question is: What did they say? simple and in the indirect speech it becomes

and indirect speech. What do you observe?

Say: That’s right. Okay we have more

examples.
All the students from the right column
please read.

(Students in the Right column read.)

 She told Lily that her sister had gone to

Shanghai.

 He said that he didn’t like his job.

Students:
The direct speech is in the present perfect but
in the indirect speech it becomes past perfect.

Say: What can you observe from the

sentences?
Students: Answer
What tense is used in the direct speech?
1. was
2. had
3. didn’t
Say: Let’s try. Take note: 1 step back. Fill in
4. wanted
the blanks. Number 1 is done for you. Who
wants to try number 2? (Call a student to
write on the board.)

Students: No. ma’am.

All Girls:
Rule #4. If the indirect speech is in the past
perfect or past perfect continues, no need to
change.
Say: Good job! Do you have any question?
If none, let’s proceed to rule number 4. All boys read:
Requesting all the girls to read.  He said that he had been selling the car
long time ago.
 She said that she had eaten breakfast.
Say: Example. I will read the direct speech  She said that she had washed the dishes.
