FAILURE OF CRYSTAL PEPSI
• A Great Idea which failed due to Poor Execution
• Rushed its launch because of Super Bowl Craze
in USA, as part of a 40 million $ campaign
• Resulting in smaller testing phase
• News came into the headquarters that UV of
sunlight was spoiling crystal Pepsi giving it a
strange flavor
• Crystal Pepsi did not taste like original Pepsi
because the trade secret was not revealed to the
food scientist and head of R&D, Kumar.
• All these resulted in an initial craze and rise in
sales as people were excited to try it, but as
Kumar said, “Everyone will try this, but nobody is
going to retry it”
• Captured a national market share of 2.4%,
• But fell quickly and ended up with the annual
share of 1.1% in 1993
• And pulled off the market in early 1994
