The Lifestyle Discourse and Media Portrayal of Thai Gay Men and
Ladyboys in the Television Series Diary of Tootsies in 2016-2017

Abstract— This research aims to explore dimensions of the lifestyle discourse and to reveal the identities of Thai gay men
and ladyboys in recent years in a popular Thai series called Diary of Tootsies. Using the series’ scripts with statements and
utterances referring to “coming out of the closet” of gay men and ladyboys, activities they get involved in LGBT
communities, attitudes of heterosexual characters toward their behaviors, and, identity construction, the language and non-
verbal expressions surrounding gay men and ladyboys are analyzed to investigate the variety of their hybrid lifestyles and
identities in a contemporary metropolitan context. Studying gay men and ladyboys’ lifestyles, as a dominant source of social
identity, can demonstrate their values and beliefs in the unity and friendship among urban middle class gay men and
ladyboys, hope to become celebrities, significance of physical beauty, pursuit and struggles to gain acceptance. The results
show destructive consequences of living materialistic lifestyle and also point out dynamic characterization and identity
construction. The findings are further discussed by relating the gay men and ladyboy’s representation and portrayal of
leading characters to real life experiences in order to present the series producer’s views and the audience’s perceptions.

1. INTRODUCTION
Portrayed mainly in negative ways, LGBT (lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and transgender) people in the Thai media
have been given the roles of comedy characters or have
been presented with mental deficiency. Therefore, it is
difficult to see positive sides of homosexuality in the
media. To further illustrate, according to recent online
news about LGBT groups, bisexual men have increased
the risk of HIV infection [1]. This fact seemingly alarms
people in the country and these groups of people have
been stigmatized as abnormal or having deviating
behaviors. However, recently, studies have shown that
there are some LGBT people who gain acceptance from
the Thai society. On the one hand, this phenomenon can
shed a brighter future for them; on the other hand, it might
be just an act of moral legitimization of an ideal society
that recognizes and affirms sexual diversity. The study of
their discourses, thus, is worth investigating.
In the past decade, Thais have seen more frequently
from television programs that LGBT actors and singers
show their talents on the screen. Additionally, there are
movies that are highly favored by the general Thai
viewers with the presentation of positive Thai LGBT fluid
identities. One of the most well-known Thai LGBT
movies is the reclaimed Iron Ladies, a true story about a
Thai National Champion Volleyball team, formed up of
LGBT as well as transvestite and transsexual members
[2]. Some critics praised the movie for its success in
conveying positive meaningful messages, particularly, the
importance of teamwork as well as the desire for respect
and acceptance among LGBT friends. Besides, viewers
are entertained by the costumes and dialogues, but, most
importantly, by the team’s superior talents and skills in
the sport of volleyball [3].
Recently in early 2016, a television series called
Diary of Tootsies, another popular true narrative story of


three heartbroken LGBT friends seeking for true love has
gone viral. The series from GDH 559 Company of 12
episodes in each season of its show on TV is one of the
first Thai series in which all main characters are openly
queer. In each episode, the stories of mishap, laughter,
tears and encounters with other eccentric characters of this
series have been raking in millions of views per episode
online TV’s app reruns [4]. Thachpacha Setthachai, the
creator and series script writer presents the strong rainbow
power in various aspects of the “tootsie” whose online
diary has been converted into the series [5]. Reference [5]
also shows that Diary of tootsies the series has gained
popularity popular among Thai audience and transgender
communities through social media from the episode 6 of
its first season with the famous defecate situation in car
[3], [4].
Studying the LGBT lifestyles and behaviors, in other
words, their representations, by means of discourse
analysis through the English subtitle dialogues of Diary of
Tootsies the series in different scenes, hence, will allow
me to propose a true and most recent Thai LGBT people’s
lifestyles in the most famous TV series. While, in this
study, gay men and ladyboys (effeminate gay men) were
the focus as two representative groups of LGBT, the
discourse analysis will reveal heterosexual characters’
behaviors towards the homosexual characters and identity
construction and maintenance.
2. LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Queer theory
Queer theory builds both upon feminist challenges to
the idea that gender is part of the essential self and upon
gay or lesbian studies' close examination of the socially
constructed nature of sexual acts and identities. Whereas

gay and lesbian studies focused its inquiries into natural
and unnatural behavior with respect to homosexual
behavior, queer theory expands its focus to encompass
any kind of sexual activity or identity that falls into
normative and deviant categories [6]. Queer theory
examines the constitutive discourses of homosexuality
developed in the last century in order to place queer in its
historical context and surveys contemporary arguments
both for and against this latest terminology [7]. It
primarily explains the fact that nothing within one’s
identity is fixed and the identity is more than a pile of
things people have previously expressed, and, thus, there
is not really an inner self [8]. People come to believe that
they have one particular identity through the repetition of
discourses about it. Consequently, gender, like other
aspects of identity, is a form of performance that can be
changed. With this definition, the binary division
between masculinity and femininity is a social
construction built on the binary division between men and
women- which is also a social construction. It is possible
for anyone to challenge the traditional views of
masculinity and femininity, and sexuality [9].
2.2 Discourse of gay and ladyboy lifestyle
The study of gay lifestyles can be conducted by
means of discourse analysis—the systematic investigation
of verbal actions, speeches and dialogues delivered by the
ladyboy characters. Upon the discourse analysis, a
number of themes or topics of conversations are identified
and their roles in defining lifestyles are discussed; these
are: activities or behaviours; values and attitudes;
individuals versus groups; group interaction, coherence,
recognisability and choice [10]. Categories or patterns of
certain lifestyles can be offered and a brief indication of
gay lifestyles can be presented.
In the early 1980s, Foucault became more publicly
out as a gay man. He had been talking about how a gay
relationship can be negotiated and created, in the absence
of an established lifestyle model for such a partnership
[8]. From his 1981 interview for Gai Pied, Foucault
ponders:
Is it possible to create a homosexual mode of
life? This notion of mode of life seems important to
me. A way of life can be shared among individuals of
different age, status, and social activity. It can yield
intense relations not resembling those that are
institutionalized. It seems to me that a way of life can
yield a culture and an ethics. To be gay I think is not
to identify with the psychological traits and the
visible masks of the homosexual but to try to define
and develop a way of life.” [8].
Being gay is interesting because ready-made lifestyle
patterns do not come pack as heterosexuality does. It
represents the freedom, and challenge, to develop a
meaningful lifestyle [8]. Studies have found that
discourses of gay men in the forms of daily conversations,
personal dialogues, interviews from different media
channels provide researchers with more understanding of
how real gays or ladyboys live in a particular society.
Their lifestyles are expressed both at work and from
leisure behavior patterns and, on an individual basis, in
activities, attitudes, interests, opinions, values, and
allocation of income. Each lifesyle also reflects their self-
image or self-concept; the way they see themselves and
believe they are seen by the others. Therefore, a lifestyle
is a composite of motivations, needs, and wants and is
influenced by factors such as culture, family, reference
groups, and social class [10]
Lifestyles, purchasing behaviors and media exposure
of male homosexuals in Bangkok which can be
categorized into six lifestyles; namely, homey lifestyle,
night party lifestyle, openly gay lifestyle, trendy lifestyle,
conservative and introvert lifestyle and active healthy
lifestyle [11]. In this paper, the discourses along with
characterization methods of all leading ladyboy characters
were closely examined to further understand patterns and
portrayals of lifestyles, and, compare with other
heterosexual characters in Thai TV series in the
discussion.
2.3 Identity of Thai ladyboy
There are considerable theories and research
suggesting various definitions and behavioral patterns of
gay men and ladyboys’ identities. To study Thai
ladyboys’ identities in the present, different concepts,
definitions and interpretations of gender are explored.
Since the study of gender has gained its popularity in
western countries in the late 70’s, medical expertise
identifies human biological sex into two major types—
masculine and feminine [12]. Originally, a person with
two sexual organs is called “queer”. Later, however, the
term is used to describe a gender role as a reflection to
certain behaviors [13]. From this definition, it can be
concluded that sexual expression and behaviors are not
about the body, but they contain the order, complexity and
are the multivariate and sequential process [14].
To psychologists genders can be defined through the
idea of relationship, love and family of heterosexuals and
homosexuals. [15] In contrast, in social studies, it is
believed that gender roles are set up by the society which
shape people to act in accordance to various social
expectations and such terms as ‘third sex’, alternative
genders or LGBT are the result of the influence by the
idea of discrimination against opposite sex. Additionally,
gender is a process that its role can be changed by
situations and, thus, is called gender performativity. The
gender role does not need to match the natural sex. It can
be expressed as a result of a feeling [16]. Despite that fact,
many people show their gender roles as a form of sexual
symbol through dresses [17].
Increasing the availability of GLB role models in the
media may positively influence GLB identity. A study’s
survey and in-depth interviews of 126 GLB in Texas
indicated that the media influenced their self-realization,
coming out, and current identities by providing role
models and inspiration and that media role models serve
as sources of pride, inspiration, and comfort [12].
3. METHODOLOGY
Based on discourse analysis method, the researcher
collected the data by watching each episode of Diary of
Tootsies the series three times, specifically looking for
important issues. The key points and discourses of
lifestyles of the 12 episodes in each season were
transcribed, coded, and carefully analyzed for the
identification and categorization of the lifestyles. The
