Assessing sustainability risks in the supply chain of the textile industry under uncertainty

Industries worldwide face comprehensive pressures from governments, non-government organizations

(NGOs), legislative bodies, media, and other stakeholders to ensure sustainability in their supply chains
due to their harmful impact on the environment and society. Risks are often considered in terms of the
"likelihood" of negative occurrences and their "impact". Dispersed suppliers, spread across the globe,
contribute significantly to pollution. Studies show that sustainable supply chain management serves as an
eco-friendly business tool, creating competitive advantages and sustaining the environment.
Consequently, sustainability has gained significant importance in supply chain management due to its
strategic business advantages. Currently, industries encounter supply chain sustainability risks from
various sources. This study identifies five risk groups along with twenty sustainability risk factors, with
the top three being 'poor product transportation system', 'air, water, and soil pollution', and 'factory fire'.
Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) not only impacts a company's profitability but also
enhances its resilience, driving its adoption among practitioners. The textile industry of Bangladesh
presents significant sustainability risks, with factors such as poor transportation systems and
environmental pollution identified as top concerns. This study's novel approach categorizes these risks
into five groups, providing valuable insights for managing sustainability challenges in the industry.

Modeling supply chain sustainability-related risks and vulnerability: insights from the
textile sector of Pakistan
Sustainability-related risk and vulnerability management have garnered significant attention, particularly
in developing countries like Pakistan, where manufacturing industries face economic pressures and strive
to enhance sustainable supply chain practices for business excellence. The present research aims to
investigate critical supply chain risks linked to sustainable development goals, encompassing social,
economic, and environmental factors. Findings reveal that endogenous environmental risks are most
significant for textile manufacturing, with high interface between various sustainability-related risks,
indicating the complexity of the challenges faced. This study offers a toolkit for industrial managers and
policymakers, facilitating the creation of a sustainable manufacturing culture by addressing organizational
risk factors effectively. The research contributes by recognizing and categorizing 26 sustainability-related
risks into six thematic groups, offering a systematic framework for managing risks associated with supply
chain sustainability. The developed risk management process provides valuable insights and strategic
information, enabling effective handling of sustainability risks within textile supply chains. Effective
strategies for risk treatment can enhance supply chain sustainability, controlling the negative impacts of
identified risks and promoting sustainable manufacturing practices.
