Target

From the previous learning material, you have learned the process of
bleaching hair and improved your skill as a hairdresser.

In this material, you will be more familiarized with the knowledge and skills
about post-service activities like advising the client for hair care and maintenance,
sanitation and sterilization of tools following OHS, disposal of wastes and cleaning
of workstation.

After going through this learning material, you are expected to:

1.2 Sanitize and store tools and equipment and implements after use according
to salon procedures;
1.3 Dispose wastes of according to OH&S requirements; and

LESSON I
PERFORM POST-SERVICE ACTIVITIES

After performing hair bleaching, it is also important to perform post-service


activities. Post-Service Activities are activities that shows a hairdresser’s
knowledge, skills and attitude in maintaining customer relations and maintaining a
safe workplace for the client, staff and others. Such activities are the following:
1. Advise client on hair care and maintenance;
2. Sanitize and store tools and equipment and implements after use according
to salon procedures;
3. Dispose wastes of according to OH&S requirements; and
4. Clean and prepare workstation for next activity.

Hair Care and Maintenance


When any color service is complete, it is imperative to give the client the
correct advice. A hairdresser should discuss the following advice to the client to
ensure a long-lasting result and client satisfaction.
• Use a moisture-rich conditioner.
• Wash hair with cold water
• Avoid harsh soaps, chemicals (especially chlorine) & any harsh shampoo
• Try to keep out of extended exposure to sunlight and water
• Comb and brush the hair daily.
• Suggest that client must have their hair trimmed and styled regularly.
• Retouch color every four to six weeks, depending on the color’s lightening in
regards to the natural hair color.
• Use the right shampoo and conditioner.
• Avoid brushing the hair when its wet and blow-drying harshly.
• Protect hair from sun and salt water.
• Get split ends cut every six weeks or less.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS


Occupational Health and Safety Standards is a planned system to prevent
illness and injury at the workplace by recognizing and identifying hazards and risks.
The standard states that every salon owner and its employees must identify the risks
and hazards at the workplace and find ways to remove them.

Requirements in Identifying Hazards in the Workplace


1. The workplace must be surveyed and the survey report must be available to
the employees.
2. Determine if the identify hazards require the use of Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE). If so, the employees must identify appropriate PPE for the
particular hazard.
3. The employees must know about the hazard to avoid accidents.
4. The employees should know the proper use of PPE.

5. Special attention must be given to working conditions that can produce
hazards.

Workplace Safety Guidelines


• Make sure the entrance is free from trip or fall.
• Floors should be dried and carpets are free from snags or tears.
• Nails are not protruded from walls.
• All surfaces are cleaned and organized.
• Extension cords are kept and should not cause tripped over.
• Electric power sockets should not be overloaded.
• Power switch should be switch off after use.
• Electrical equipment should be turned off and unplugged before leaving the
salon. All fire exit should be clear and accessible.
• Fire extinguisher should always be available.
• Signages are visible and readable.
• All garbage bins are covered.
• All products that are not in used are covered.
• Products are labelled clearly.
• All flammable products are in a safe place and away from any heat.
• Hazardous materials should be kept away from children.
• Smoking should be prohibited in the workplace.
• Salon has adequate ventilation.
• Handwashing is implemented as part of personal and client hygiene.

Waste Management
It involves the collection, transport, processing, recycling, or disposal of waste
materials. It is the responsibility of the owner of the salon to develop a system to
identify the waste collected in the area and find ways on their proper disposal.

Types of Wastes
a. Solid Wastes – dry materials that are considered useless and dump or thrown
away.
b. Liquid Wastes – examples are wastewater from different sources.

Classification of Waste According to their Properties


a. Biodegradable – can be decomposed by bacteria and other microorganisms.
b. Non-Biodegradable – wastes that will not be decomposed by living organisms.

Classification of Wastes According to their Effects on Human Health &


Environment
a. Hazardous Wastes – wastes coming from commercial, industrial and
agricultural activities.
b. Non-Hazardous Wastes – include safe materials like paper, cardboards,
wrappings, paper packaging materials and others.
