Nursing Interventions & Considerations

FIRE

R.A.C.E.

Rescue
Rescue patients who are in immediate danger.

Alarm
Activate the fire alarm and immediately call for help.

Confine
Confine the fire as much as possible:
- Close fire doors.
- Place wet towels along the base of doorways.
- Turn off oxygen and other flammable gases.

Extinguish
Extinguish the fire if possible.

Evacuation
1. If safe, attempt to evacuate before the firefighters arrive;
2. Transfer patients and visitors into safety; and
3. Close the door and place a pillow in front of the door to indicate that the room has been
checked.

Nursing Considerations
1. Prioritize high-risk patients, as well as your own safety.
2. Utilize the fire emergency evacuation plan of the institution.
3. Do not use elevators.
4. Provide manual ventilation to patients on mechanical ventilation.
