CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background and Rationale of the Study

Cultural difference involves the integrated and

maintained system of socially acquired values ,beliefs, and
rules of conduct which impact the range of accepted
behaviors distinguishable from one societal group to
another .Understanding cultural differences in human
Understanding cultural differences in human behavior is an
important aspect of social science education. As students
in the HUMSS track prepare for careers in fields like
anthropology, sociology, psychology, and cultural studies,
developing this cross-cultural awareness is crucial. Prior
research has shown that exposure to social science concepts
and frameworks can enhance students’ ability to recognize,
analyze, and appreciate diverse cultural influences on
individual and group behaviors.
This study aims to investigate the effects of social
science education on Grade 11 HUMSS students’ ability to
recognize and interpret cultural differences in human
behavior. Specifically, it will examine whether and how
exposure to social science concepts, theories, and research
methods influences students’ awareness, knowledge, and
appreciation of cultural diversity.
The findings from this research will contribute to the
limited literature on the role of social science education
in developing cultural competence at the high school level.
It will provide insights into the specific social science
topics, pedagogical approaches, and learning experiences
that are most effective in fostering cross-cultural
understanding among HUMSS students.
Understanding these dynamics is important for informing
curriculum design, instructional practices, and student
learning outcomes in the HUMSS track. Enhancing cultural
awareness and sensitivity is a key objective of social
science education, and this study will offer empirical
evidence to support efforts to achieve this goal.
The results may also have broader implications for
preparing secondary school students, particularly those in
specialized academic programs, to navigate an increasingly
globalized world and engage effectively with diverse
populations.
Theoretical Framework

1. Cultural Dimensions Theory: This theory, popularized

by Geert Hofstede, identifies several dimensions along
which cultures can differ, such as individualism vs.
collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance,
and masculinity vs. femininity. By understanding these
dimensions, students can comprehend how cultural
values influence behavior and societal norms.

2. Social Identity Theory: Developed by Henri Tajfel and

John Turner, this theory explains how individuals
derive a sense of identity and self-esteem from their
membership in social groups. It helps students
understand how cultural affiliations shape behavior
and interactions, and how intergroup dynamics impact
attitudes and behaviors.

3. Intercultural Communication Competence Model: This

model emphasizes the importance of effective
communication across cultures. It includes components
such as motivation, knowledge, skills, and
mindfulness. By developing competence in
intercultural communication, students can better
navigate cultural differences and interact
respectfully with individuals from diverse
backgrounds.

4. Cultural Intelligence (CQ) Framework: CQ refers to an

individual’s capability to function effectively in
culturally diverse settings. The CQ framework
encompasses meta-cognitive, cognitive, motivational,
and behavioral aspects of cultural intelligence. By
enhancing their CQ, students can develop a deeper
understanding of cultural differences and adapt their
behavior accordingly.
Application in the Classroom

Comparative Analysis: Encourage students to compare and

contrast cultural practices, traditions, and belief systems
across different societies. This comparative approach
fosters a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and
helps students recognize the impact of culture on human
behavior.
Case Studies and Ethnographic Research: Engage students in
analyzing real-world case studies or conducting
ethnographic research within their own communities. This
hands-on approach allows students to gain practical
insights into the complexities of cultural differences and
their influence on human behavior.
Role-playing and Simulations: Organize role-playing
activities or simulations that simulate cross-cultural
interactions. This experiential learning approach can help
students develop empathy, perspective-taking skills, and a
heightened awareness of cultural nuances.
Critical Reflection and Dialogue: Create a safe space for
open discussions about cultural differences, stereotypes,
and biases. Encouraging critical reflection and dialogue
can challenge preconceived notions and promote a more
inclusive understanding of diverse cultural perspectives.

Statement of the Problems

This study aimed to seek answers to the following

questions.
Objective 1: To investigate the role of social science in
enhancing the understanding of cultural differences in
human behavior among Grade 11 HUMSS students.
