Wax bath therapy

• Wax therapy, which uses a bath of molten paraffin wax ,is one of the
most effective ways to applying heat to improve mobility by warming
the connective tissues.
• The temperature of paraffin wax is 47-55 C.
• Provide heat up to depth of 1cm.
• Transformation of heat by conduction method.
Physiological effect
• Heat production
• Circulating effect
• Analgesic effect-sedative effect on tissue
Moist heat is remarkable soothing to the patient.
• Stretching effect
INDICATION
• Pain and muscle spasm
• Edema and inflammation
• Adhesion and scar
contraindication
• Impair skin sensation(anesthesia, hyperesthesia)
• Some dermatological condition
• Circulatory dysfunction
• Analgesic drug
• Infection and open wound
• Cancer, tumor and tuberculosis
• Gross oedema
• Lack of comprehension
• Internal and external metal fixators and implants.
DISADVANTAGE
• Effective only for distal extremities in the terms of ease of
application.
• no method of temperature control once applied
• Sedimentation occur at bottom
• Passive treatment- exercise will not perform simultaneously
• Contamination due to atmosphere
• It also posses environmental concern regarding its disposal.
advantage
• 2 to 3 patients can be treated in the same time.
• Useful for the pt.with poor heat tolerance, dry scaly skin,after plaster
of paris removal.
• Can be followed by therapeutic exercises.
• Can be carried out at home
• Heat is applies evenly by conduction.
