SoFL and my intern agency. She also gave me many useful advice based on her knowledge and

experience that help me finish my intern period successfully.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE INTERNSHIP

Graduation Practicum is one of the most required contents in the curriculum of English for

Science and Technology program. Its process aims to help students get professional skills

5
through real experiences, apply and improve their knowledge learned at school as well as broaden

their working networks. An internship provides the work experience that helps students put their

education into practice, develop their leadership skills and give them a competitive advantage as

they pursue a permanent position. Additionally, internship provides practice opportunity and

environment for students to apply the theoretical understandings. Therefore, they can not only

grasp the theories, knowledge but also put them in to practice via many different situations in

reality.

Through internship, students have opportunities to expose to many kinds of people in many

various positions and get their guidance, assistance and advice. I knowledge that can build up a

perspective for my career path, nurture professional skills as well as get a chance to try tasks out

myself in specific field. On that basis, internships are the way for students to show their

commitment to professionalism, self-improvement, and excellence. They are one of the most

important factors in making themself appealing in the job market.

Graduation Practicum is a prerequisite for SoFL students seeking a bachelor's degree. Following

this internship, students must complete their study program by completing their graduation thesis

or final exam. Internships help students orient their careers after graduation, maximize their

intellectual ability, and apply reasoning to practice in a flexible manner in order to gain a new

perspective on their career.

INTERNSHIP AGENCY DESCRIPTION

About GrapeSEED

6
GrapeSEED is a Japanese copyright program that has been studied at Meysen Academy students

for 40 years. The GrapeSEED language acquisition program is designed the way children learn

their primary language-by hearing it, responding to it, and using it. They learn language through

personal social interactions and from passive observation. Babies listen to utterances in their

surroundings. In time those utterances, or sounds, begin to have meaning. The sounds become

associated with actions and behaviors. Over time, children can discern the sounds and associate

them with words, and then later use those words to communicate. As children develop, their

language skills advance to a point where they can express their daily wants, needs, and

experiences.

Students study English with GrapeSEED in a similar way to how they acquired their primary

language. They start to connect speech to meaning. Early exposure to the integrated, tightly

controlled GrapeSEED vocabulary fosters children's natural word use. Sentence content and

structure are similarly geared to a child's environment. By making English learning meaningful to

children, and by teaching English in the way that children naturally learn, GrapeSEED quickly

builds fluency.

GrapeSEED, unlike traditional programs, is based on a "joy of learning" philosophy rather than a

grammatical structure approach. It is intended to teach children words and expressions that they

can use right away in their daily lives. This communicative approach to language instruction, as

well as the high-quality materials that support it, contribute to the GrapeSEED classroom

becoming a vibrant language environment where students enjoy learning.

GrapeSEED classrooms are created to imitate a "at home" language environment. It is one in

which the language teacher and the student interact in an informal and nurturing manner.

Students are expected, but not required, to try to communicate in English using the expressions

7
they are learning. This is similar to how family members encourage children to use the language

they are learning at home. When they are able to communicate, they feel a sense of joy and

connection.

The program begins with children aged 4 to 8 years old and lasts 8 years, divided into 40 units.

Children will learn 4-5 sessions per week, each lasting 90 minutes and consisting of 40 minutes

of TSI interaction and 40 minutes of listening to focus REP. The number of sessions per week

will provide children with a continuous English-speaking environment, simulating real life in

your native country.

About Ms. Luna English

Ms. Luna English center (Ms. Luna GrapeSEED at first) was founded on May 4, 2016, with the

goal of creating a safe and progressive environment for teachers and students to truly focus on

teaching and learning. It currently has 5 branches and is continuing to grow in size. Ms. Luna

English fosters an environment in which all teachers, students, and staff communicate in English.

Personally, I find it very interesting, and I believe that it is critical for students to gain native

responses to English. In addition, all staffs are trained to follow principles of operation, namely

focusing on teaching and students’ learning English, aiming at creating the best condition for

teachers to be dedicated to education and considering the class quality and kids’ spirit as centered

principles.

Ms. Luna English's goals for the apparatus are to become a GrapeSEED center with the best

environment and standards in Vietnam. To begin, the founder of Ms. Luna English wishes to

foster a progressive, civilized, and friendly environment among participating teachers, as well as

to take care of each of their lives so that she can devote her full attention to long-term teaching.

8
Second, we wish to encourage a positive, open, and forward-thinking atmosphere among

classmates and between teachers. Last but not least, Ms. Luna English develops guidelines for

communicating with parents and kids, sending messages to pupils about proper behaviour in

English-speaking cultures.

DUTIES AND SCHEDULES

1. REP lesson

Repeated Exposure and Practice (REP) lessons build on students' prior knowledge while

providing new contents to deepen and broaden their understanding at the proper level. Daily use

of REP materials by students will accelerate their progress toward greater competency. They will

be ready to communicate in English more quickly than students who do not take advantage of

REP materials. Furthermore, children who hear English mentally picture what they are hearing,

which strengthens their capacity to think in English. Listening also nurtures children's

imagination and communication abilities. REP lessons typically 40 minutes and include

participation in fun activities as well as audio and video support.

During the REP lesson, most of the time I let students listen to songs, stories and poems in the

Unit. However, it would be boring when just listening to the audio and using finger to point ant

the words in their books, so I organize some games or interacting activities for students to make

them more engage in the class along with enhance their understanding of the Unit they are

learning. Sometimes I let students read each part of one story by their own and ask them various

questions about it. At the end of the class, I often give them small gifts or stickers as a reward for

being nice. When it is time to go home, I should make my students clean their seats and put the

chairs in correct order before leaving the class. This can help them maintain classroom discipline.

2. TSI lesson

9
The TSI (Teacher – Student Interaction) lesson means that the main teacher interacts directly

with students, guiding their classroom English communication and interactions. In TSI lesson,

teachers have opportunities to introduce new English content to help students comprehend and

correctly use the expression they are learning. The main teacher (or “homeroom teacher”) will

directly teaches students and hold funny activities. I should assist her in keeping the class quiet

and nice. Normally, TSI classes last for 40-50 minutes.

Before the teacher starts the TSI lesson, I have to prepare teaching materials according to the

exist lesson plans. The materials include flashcard about stories, poems and songs as well as the

corresponding vocabulary cards and phonetic cards (i, p, f). Afterward, I set up the seats for

students and make sure that all of them have comfortable seat and see the main teacher and the

cards clearly. Sometimes, I let student choose their preferable seat, but when they do not obey the

class rules, I will change their seat in order not to interrupt the teacher and other students.

During the TSI lesson, I assist the main teacher in stabilizing the class such as quickly reminding

students to settle in suitable positions when playing games or do some activities. Besides, I

should choose an appropriate standing or sitting position in the class to observe the whole class

and not to block students’ vision. When my students are not obeying the set rules or not

cooperating with the teacher or their friends, I come approach and gently remind them with such

simple commands (Sit nicely, be quiet, etc.) or us body and non-verbal language to express that

they should be nice in the class. For those who are aggressively uncooperative or repeatedly

making noise, I should let him get out the class and explain in English, sometimes in Vietnamese

as well, that he was acting rude or not respect teacher and his friends in the class; then allow him

to come back to the lesson if he can improve.

3. After class

10
When student finished both their REP and TSI lessons the go home, I have to collect the

materials and prepare for the next day, clean the room and make sure that all the chairs and tables

are put neatly in correct position. I also finish daily attendance report. Weekly I have to post

class’s situation in parent channel to help them follow what their child learning at school. If there

are some problems relating to each individual, I would contact and discus privately with student’s

parents and suggest the solution.

PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPROVEMENT

1. Applying learnt skills in English for Science and Technology modules

During the internship, I had the opportunity to apply various types of knowledge and what I had

learned in school to practical work. For starters, the four basic skills in the Foundation English

Module in the first and second years were a huge help because they improved my English and

helped me understand what the administrators and main teacher were saying, as well as what I

needed to do and communicate with my little children when working in an entirely English

environment.

Secondly, the Phonetic and Phonology module that I studied allows me to practice properly

pronouncing every single sound and phrase. As a result, I can easily correct my children's

incorrect pronunciations or assist them in developing better, clearer ones.

Last but not least, I greatly appreciate the (advanced) Interpretation module, which has helped me

find a better way to understand children's ideas because they tend to explain a lot about a small

problem. Furthermore, because the majority of my target listeners are children aged 6 to 10, I

employ learned techniques such as explaining a difficult word or concept in simpler terms.

11
Aside from the knowledge I gained as a student at SoFL, I also demonstrate my skills as a

volunteer in the workplace. For example, I used my leadership skills to host and organize exciting

games, as well as listen to and solve students' problems. Communication skills also help me get

along with my coworkers and the office administrator.

2. Improving English and labor Skills

I must first pass the interview and training phase before beginning my internship with Ms. Luna

GrapeSEED. First, I must complete an interview to persuade the recruiter that I am qualified for

this position. I was questioned about my previous experiences, as well as my knowledge and

skills in teaching children. Following that, I had to answer some questions in English and present

my ideas in a specific field to test my language skills. The interviewer also provided feedback

and comments based on what I presented. This is an excellent opportunity for me to receive

feedback and assess my strengths and weaknesses.

During my internship, I received such enthusiastic guidance from the staff and my supervisor. It

was difficult for me to remember students’ names at first because I had to work with so many

kids of various ages. I felt a little nervous and awkward. However, the administrator and

supervisor of the center provided me with some handy tips for dealing with children and

effectively managing class. I was taught how to speak to small students in simple and appropriate

ways because they must deal with a variety of communication difficulties while learning a new

language. I was also taught to be more patient and persistent when teaching students of various

ages.

More importantly, I work in an English environment with the goal of assisting children in

developing the most natural communication skills. That is, I only use English to communicate

and interact with my coworkers and students. It was an excellent opportunity to practice my

12
English skills that I got from the foundation module as well as my profession skills. During the

internship, I worked with native speakers on occasion, which not only helped me improve my

speaking skills but also demonstrated the diversity of English in different countries.

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

1. Students’ excitement

When the majority of my students are children aged 6 to 10, it is both easy and difficult to get

them excited and engaged in class. They'd get bored if I just let them listen to the same audio

from the previous days for an extended period of time. So I should always find new ways to teach

them while keeping their interest in the lesson. For example, I frequently hold small activities

(touch your body parts, find the words, etc.) or let them be the teacher and describe a given item

while others guess. I occasionally allow them to draw pictures while singing. This can help them

remember the song faster and avoid boredom.

Meanwhile, some kids may get overexcited and be too loud at times. They may be unaware that

they are behaving inappropriately. In those cases, I should encourage my overexcited students to

control themselves to see if they were being excessively loud, disturbing the entire class, or

hitting friends. Following that, I frequently suggest simple solutions to help them behave better

the next time.

2. Interpreting child’s ideas

Understanding pupils' ideas and vice versa are the most challenging problems I have to deal with.

Kids tend to talk a lot or are curious about how to say in English things which they already know

in Vietnamese. I should pay attention to what they have to say and figure out the right ways to

put these ideas into words. On the other hand, there are many new terms and expressions that

pupils cannot immediately understand in the process of a new language acquisition. In that

13
situation, I can demonstrate the concept by utilizing extremely straightforward words and phrases

that they are already familiar with or using body language. For example, when my students don

not know the meaning of the word “stomp”, I will show that I am angrily putting my foot down

on the ground hard and quickly. Later on, they will readily understand how and when to utilize

these words.

3. The property owner

During my internship, I worked at a center that was rented from an elderly lady. However, she is

an unfriendly person who constantly scrutinizes what my students and staff members do. She

scolded me aggressively several times for unreasonable reasons. She screamed at me for opening

the windows or turning on the air conditioner without her permission. Sometimes the reason was

that my students were running around the classroom chasing each other, and she claimed that

they were destroying the house's facilities. She was even mad at me when I did not know how to

turn on the light in the new room and asked her.

I didn't know how to deal with or react to the owner at first, so I just let her yell at me all the

time. My supervisor and the center’s administrator knew the truth of the matters and her

personality better than I did, they gave me some great advice, namely that if I kept the matters to

myself, others would perceive me as weak and easily bullied. I should discuss the issues I had

with the owner so that they can resolve them.

14
CONCLUSION

In a nutshell, this internship has been an excellent and rewarding experience. I can conclude that

there have been a lot I have learnt from my work at Ms. Luna English. I can safely say that my

understanding of the job environment has increased greatly. However, I do think that there are

some aspects of the job that I could have done better and that I need to work on. I need to build

more patient and consistent when working with kids. I can feel my improvement in English and

labor skills after 6 weeks working as an intern teaching assistant and REP teacher. This is a

chance I can broaden my working networks as well as reviewing and applying the theoretical

knowledge that I have gained at SoFL and HUST.

RECOMMENDATION

After my internship, I realized that if I work as an educator, I should pay more attention to my

target customers, particularly my students and their parents. I should train myself more both

physically and mentally. I believe it would be preferable to have a module that provides students

with an overall view of working environments or workshops in which we discuss specific

professions.
