1. GENERL DESCRIPTION
1.1. Introduction
Purpose :
Purpose of this document is to detail out the description & functions of Cold Reheat steam
system along with controls envisaged to ensure intended function of the system with regards
to the overall plant operation. This document also outlines brief operation philosophy of the
system.
Scope:
Cold reheat steam system starts from HP turbine exhaust and consists of all piping and
components upto Boiler reheater inlet.
2. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Two parallel Cold Reheat (CRH) lines (08LBC03BR001 & 08LBC03BR002) are
routed from HP turbine exhaust and connected to CRH common header
(08LBC03BR024). This common header is again bifurcated into two parallel lines
(08LBC03BR003 & 08LBC03BR004) near the Boiler area which are then routed to
the reheater inlet headers. The function of Cold Reheat steam line is to convey steam
from HP turbine exhaust to reheater inlet.
The cold reheat steam piping material is of alloy steel (ASTM A335 P11) from the HP
Turbine exhaust to the HP bypass connection to CRH common header and of carbon
steel (ASTM A106 Gr. B) from downstream of HP bypass connection to reheater inlet.
The design pressure of the Cold Reheat system is determined in accordance Design
Criteria Document (DCD). The Cold Reheat System Design Pressure is applicable for
the design of the Cold Reheat headers, branches, drain lines etc. Steam velocity is
maintained per velocity limits given in the Design Criteria Document (DCD).
Piping and piping components will be insulated with Rock Wool material for heat retention
and /or personnel protection. Each lead of Cold Reheat line consists of a pneumatically
actuated check valve near to the turbine (08LBC01AA701 & 08LBC01AA702). This
pneumatically actuated check valve prevents the back flow of steam to HP turbine during HP
Bypass valve operation.
Two (2) safety valves (08LBC99AA400, 08LBC99AA401 & 08LBC99AA402,
08LBC99AA403) are provided on each cold reheat steam lines near reheat inlet header
which acts as a safety protection device during over pressure or pressure surges in the cold
reheat steam lines.
The Cold Reheat Steam header also supplies Steam to Deaerator & BFP Turbine at low
loads, continuous to Feed water heater – 7, Auxiliary steam header and turbine gland
seal steam requirements of the steam turbine and also steam is supplied for the soot
blowers of boiler as per the requirement.
upstream of pneumatically actuated check valves and are routed to condenser via Flash
tank. The operation of these drain valves is based on start-up/shut down sequence of the
turbine.
Manually operated Alternate drain valves (08LBC03AA104, 08LBC03AA105,
08LBC03AA106) are provided in the drain lines (08LBC03BR007, 08LBC03BR011 &
08LBC03BR015) which are routed to atmospheric flash tank. These drain valves are
operated only when respective motorized drain valves are closed. The operation of these
drain valves are based on operator’s discretion.
Low points in the cold reheat steam header are provided with drip leg. The drip leg
(08LBC03BR021) on the CRH common header is provided with motor operated drain valve
(08LBC03AA043) and drain is routed to condenser via turbine flash tank. The operation of
the drain valve is based on the level in the drip leg monitored by two level switches
(08LBC03CL201 & 08LBC03CL202)
Low points in ventilator line are provided with drip legs at upstream and down stream of
ventilator valve. Drip legs (08LBC03BR411 & 08LBC03BR415) are provided with dedicated
Solenoid operated drain valve (08LBC03AA417 & 08LBC03AA421) and drains are routed to
flash tank. The operation of these drain valves is based on level switches provided on the
drip legs.
CRH piping is designed to slope to these drains under all conditions of pipe expansion
from cold to hot positions. Manually-operated isolation valves are provided as a root valve
near to each drain connection. These manual valves are for maintenance purposes only
and should be LOCKED OPEN during unit operation. The motor-operated drain valve on
drain lines are operated in accordance with plant operation- Start-up and shutdown
sequences.
3. TECHNICAL PARTICULARS
4. MODE OF OPERATION
During normal operation steam from HP Turbine outlet flows to reheater through Cold
Reheat steam pipes. The Cold Reheat steam is supplied to Auxiliary steam header, HP
Feedwater Heater #7 and gland steam header.
Drip legs are provided at the low point of the cold reheat common header and ventilator line.
Drip leg drain actuator operated valves are operated based on the condensate level, sensed
by the respective level switches. Drain valves shall remain closed during normal operation.
Whenever the turbine-generator is tripped, the Cold Reheat drain valves and HP & LP
Turbine bypass Valves will be opened immediately and the Power actuated NRVs will be
closed.
Power operated check valves will be operated to prevent back flow of steam to
the Turbine during Bypass/start-up operation.
Purpose:
The Cold Reheat Steam system drain valves will be used to drain condensate from the
Cold Reheat Steam piping during start-up of the unit.
Functional Description:
The drain valves will be kept closed during normal operation of the turbine and will be
operated only during turbine start up, shutdown and turbine trip conditions through
sequence logic. This drain MOVs can also be operated from DCS in Auto/Manual based
on process requirement and operator judgement.
The following DCS control signals will be associated with the drain valves
(08LBC03AA041, 08LBC03AA042) at HP turbine exhaust:

5.1.2. Low point Drip pot drain valve (08LBC03AA053) on CRH Header
Purpose:
The Cold Reheat Steam system low point drain valves will be used to drain condensate
from the Cold Reheat Steam piping.
Functional Description:
The motor operated low point drain valve will be kept closed during normal operation of
the plant. It will be opened automatically upon detection of high water level in the
