We gonna proof that 𝑐 = 𝑎 + 𝑏 is true if 𝑐 is the hypotenuse.

1. Make a right-angled triangle that has a different base and height!

2. Make three more right-angled triangles that are the same as before (number 1)!

3. Now we have four right-angled triangles. Next, give the names 𝑎 and 𝑏 to denote the
base and the height, as in the following example:
4. Arrange the puzzle pieces to form a square shape with a smaller square hole in the
middle. Refer to the example below!

If you find it difficult when arrange the shapes, watch this video: bit.ly/py-thagoras
Paste the result of arranging origami right-angled triangles below!
5. Now we have 2 squares, the outermost square and the small square inside. By using the
area of a square formula and distributive property, determine the area of the outermost
square in terms of 𝑎 and 𝑏!

6. Determine the area of the 4 right-angled triangles!

7. Determine the area of the small square, given that the hypotenuse is c!

The area of the small square can be found by subtracting the area of the outermost
square with the area of 4 right-angled triangles.

Therefore, it can be stated as follows:

We have proved the Pythagorean Theorem and obtained the formula to find the
2
hypotenuse which is 𝑐 =

The Pythagorean theorem can be used to find the side of a right-angled triangle if
the other two sides are known.

So, what is the formula to find the other two sides?
