ABSTRACT

In this dissertation "Computer Aided Design of Sump Cum Pump house" the

various structures including Screening Chamber have been analyzed and designed using

Structural Engineering Software StaadPro 2001 and additional computer programs have

been developed in C language for analysis and design of other structural components like

staircases (including its beams) and gantry girder. The proposed sump cum pump house

is a live project in Kanpur city. For load calculations and designs the following codes are

referred: IS 456:2000 Indian Standard Code of Practice for Plain and Reinforced

Concrete, IS 3370 (Parts I, 11-1965, IV-1967) Code of Practice for Concrete Structures

for the Storage of Liquids and IS 1893-1984 Criteria for earthquake resistant design of

structures (fourth revision). The computer package developed thus is useful for complete

design of various structures of sump cum pump house, along with the StaadPro Software.

1. INTRODUCTION

The time bound designing of projects, economy and requirements of

engineering productivity have created need for computer-aided design of structures,

which provides faster modeling and analysis, rapid design and drafting. The basic

operations to perform in construction of any structure are analysis, design, detailing

and drafting of elements of structure. Revision of analysis, design and drawings due

to economical and safety aspects is done frequently, resulting in enormous amount of

mechanical work.

To overcome these problems computer programs for analysis and design

enables a designer to quickly revise the designs and also allows checking various

combinations of loads. This not only saves the designer from cumbersome

calculations but also saves precious time.

The proposed sewage cum pump house consists of the following structural

elements:

➢ Frame — Columns, Beams, Walls and Slabs.

➢ Staircases

➢ Gantry Girder

➢ Foundation

The screening chamber consists of the following structural elements:

➢ Frame — Columns, Beams, Walls and Slabs.

➢ Staircases

➢ Foundation

1
Staad Pro has been used for Analysis and design of Frames and additional

packages have been developed for Gantry Girder and Staircases (including supporting

beams). Raft foundation has been designed manually.

Using the available software (Staad Pro) and developed softwares complete

design has been carried out.

2. SEWAGE PUMPING STATION

2.1 SEWAGE PUMPING STATION: [4]

The building where pumps and other accessories are installed for lifting

sewage is called a "sewage pumping station." Such a building should be located at a

carefully chosen site.

The site for pumping station should be near a natural disposal unit such as, a

stream, a lake, or a river etc., so that in case of breakdown of pumping, the

accumulated sewage can overflow into this natural source of disposal. But at the

same time, the site should be such that it is not liable to get flooded either due to

seepage from adjoining river stream or due to high floods in the river stream.

2.2 Necessity of sewage pumping :; [15]

(i) To lift sewage from low areas to main sewers.

(ii) To lift sewage from interceptors to treatment plants.

(iii) To cross obstacles, such as stream, instead of by inverted siphon.

(iv) To transfer sludge from settling tanks to disposal processes

(v) To recirculate the contents of the sludge digestion tank.

(vi) To return the activated sludge to aeration processes.

2.3 A Typical Sewage Pumping Station: [2,4,9]

A. typical sewage pumping station is shown in fig.2.1. Such an installation

has the following major components:

i) Grit channel

ii) Screens

iii) Sump well or Wet well

3
iv) Dry well or Pump well

v) Motor room

vi) Raising mains

vii) Emergency exit pipe

viii) Other accessories.

2.3.1 GRIT CHANNEL:

The sewage entering the pumping station generally contains a lot of

indestructible solid matter, such as grit, gravel, sand etc., in addition to the solids in

suspension like feces, papers, rags etc. It is necessary to remove as much etc" this

material as possible before pumping, so as to minimize the wear and tear of the pump

impeller and of the rising main. The solid matter is therefore, peof all removed before

the sewage enters the pump.

In order to remove the solid matter, the sewage is first passed through grit

channel, where the velocity is reduced to the order of 0.15 to 0.3 m/sec.

Grit channel is a long basin with an enlarged cross-section above the invert

line of the inlet sewer, which results in reducing the flow velocity. Due to the reduced

velocity, the grit settles down, and is removed by an endless chain to which perforated

buckets are fixed. The chain is operated by power, and the grit is dredged into a

closed container, till it is removed and disposed of.

2.3.2 SCREENS:

After the removal of grit from the sewage the screens are provided in order

to trap the floating matter in the sewage; which otherwise will choke and damage the

pumps.

4
5
Sewage Pumping Station
Screens are of two types — coarse and fine. Normally, in large installations,

both these types of screens are provided together. The sewage is first passed through

coarse screens having clear openings of 5 to 10 cm, to intercept solids like scrubbing

brushes, blocks of wood, etc. The sewage is then passed through fine screens having

openings of 2.5 to 5 cm, to intercept all except very fine particles of sewage. The

screens are cleaned mechanically by rakes having fingers attached to either end of an

endless roller chain running over sprokets; the fingers entering at the bottom, drawing

through it and moving vertically till they are over a collecting trough where they are

tilted and screenings are deposited in scaled bins for quick disposals.

2.3.3 SUMP WELL OR WET WELL:

The purpose of providing a sump well is to form a suction pit from which

the pump may draw sewage through the suction pipe. It also acts as an equalizing

basin to minimize the load fluctuations on the pump. A float connected to a switch is

.provided in this sump well in such a way that when the sewage rises above the float

level, the switch gets pressed and pump automatically starts functioning, thus

pumping sewage. This designed level of the sewage in the sump well is kept above

the pump level, which avoids the necessity of priming of the pump.

The minimum detention period of the sump well is of 30 minutes to avoid

frequent switching on and off. This will otherwise increase the cost of current, as the

starting current is greater than the full load current.

The floor of a wet well should fall sharply toward the suction inlet of the

pump and the fall of the floor should be such that the matter which may settle on the

floor during the detention period will gravitate to the pump intake. When more than

one pump is provided, as in the case of larger pumping installation, it is advisable to

6
split up the whole sump storage capacity into two or more compartments. This will

facilitate to shut off one compartment for cleaning purpose with continued operation

of pumping from the other compartment.

2.3.4 DRY WELL OR PUMP WELL:

In this room, pumps are installed, •and the end of their suction pipe is placed

in the wet well. The general layout of a pump room should be carefully made, and it

may include a repair workshop, office and storeroom, etc. Enough provision for its

possible future extension may also be made. The number and sizes of pumps required

should be carefully worked out, and depends upon the quantity of sewage likely to

enter into the station. The provision for stand-by units should also be made.

2.3.5 MOTOR ROOM:

The room is situated above the pump room and accommodates the electric

motor, which drives the pumps. The other appurtenances like automatic starters, flow

recorders,- etc. -are also installed in this room.

2.3.6 RISING MAINS:

The sewage, after being pumped, is taken to the high-leveled gravity sewer

through the rising mains. The rising main may be of cast-iron or asbestos cement

pressure pipes. The velocity of flow in the rising main should not be less than 0.75

m/sec at any time of flow.

2.3.7 EMERGENCY EXIT PIPE:

An emergency exit pipe, connecting the sump well with a natural stream or

river, is preferably provided at all major pumping stations. Hence, when the sump

well overflows due to any reason, the excess sewage can be easily directed through

this exit pipe.

7
2.3.8 OTHER ACCESSORIES:

Besides the above major parts, various other appurtenances, such as,

automatic starters, check valves, flow recorders etc., are needed and installed in the

pumping station.

2.4 SAFETY DESIGN OF SEWAGE PUMPING STATION: [1]

"A joint committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the

Water Pollution Control Federation", suggested a checklist of safety features for plant

sewage pumping stations. The checklist is as follows:

➢ Crowded underground structures for pumping equipment are avoided. Use of

superstructure stations is highly desirable.

➢ Stairs are used for access to pump rooms in preference to vertical

ladders.(Where space is critical, a spiral stair way is used, but even a ship's

ladder is preferable to a vertical ladder. When vertical ladders cannot be

avoided and their depth exceeds 3m, they should be equipped with a hoop

cage, or offset landings may be used.

➢ For all exposed moving parts of pumps and equipment guards are specified.

➢ Dead-front and dead-rear switchboards are used and non-conductive rubber

mats are provided in front of them.

➢ Explosion7proof wiring, lighting, switches, and other electrical equipment are

specified in all locations where potentially explosive atmospheres of

flammable gas or vapor with air may accumulate. Moisture-proof equipment is

specified where difficulties from .dampness may exist, but where there is no

possibility of flammable gas accumulation.

8
➢ It may be specified that all electrical wiring be properly insulated and

grounded. Exposed wiring should not be permitted (A voltage of not over 110

V for control circuits is desirable).

➢ The structure throughout is provided with ample natural or artificial lighting;

especially in the wet and dry wells. Good illumination is aided by specifying

light-coloured paints for walls and ceilings.

➢ Hoists and rails are provided for the removal of heavy equipment such as

screenings, cans, or pumps requiring repair.

➢ The water supply under good pressure is furnished for hosing wet wells and

dry wells.

➢ All cross connections between a potable water supply and the sewage

pumping equipment are prohibited.

➢ Adequate ventilation is assured in wet wells or dry wells by natural or

mechanical means.

(In deep wet or dry wells, mechanical ventilation is best accomplished by

providing an air inlet near the ceiling and an exhaust dust, connected to an

exhaust fan, located just above the maximum sewage level in wet wells or near

the floor of dry wells. The fan capacity should be sufficient to effect a

complete change of air in from 2 to 5min, depending on the manner of

operation. In some instances ventilation in wet wells has been accomplished

by drawing air in and exhausting the wet well atmosphere through the sewer

inlet to the wet well. Combustible gas indicators and alarms are sometimes

desirable in large wet wells serving industrial areas).

➢ Wet wells are completely segregated from dry wells and entrance is affordable

from the outside atmosphere only.

9
➢ Judiciously warning signs are posted and red paint is used for inherent hazards

such as steep stairs or projecting objects (for example, valve wheels or ceiling

space heaters).

➢ Standby gasoline's engines are fuelled by means of a fuel pump or a shutoff

valve is provided for small-elevated gasoline storage tanks mounted on the

engine to prevent the continuous discharge of gasoline through a defective

carburetor. Large elevated gasoline storage tanks located inside structures

should not be used.

➢ Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are mounted conveniently near the sewage

pump motors and switchboard rooms.

➢ In order to reduce the noise from pumping station, thick walls and not over

large windows, particularly those with leaded glass, and roofs of reinforced

concrete, are preferable to buildings with large window lightly glazed and

ordinary tiled roofs. [3]

2.5 PUMPING STATION CAPACITIES: [2]

A sewage pumping station will usually be designed to have a pumping

capacity of up to six times dry weather flow, this being the normal basis of design

of the sewers themselves if they are more-or-less 'separate', or if suitable storm

sewage overflows are incorporated upstream of the pumps.

When the sewerage system is 'combined', flows considerably in excess of

six times dry weather flow can be expected in times of storm. If pumps are installed

for flows up to six times dry weather flow, provision must be made for the excess

flows to be diverted at one or more storm sewage overflows. These can be sited on

a sewer where a convenient watercourse is available; or it may be convenient to

have a storm sewage overflow at the inlet to the pumping station.

10
3. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY AND CODAL PROVISIONS

3.1 General:

In this chapter the various design principles have been included. The
pumping station structure is a major part of the cost of the station. It is therefore
essential that its shape be efficient from a structural standpoint, that it be economical
to construct, and that the size of the wet and dry wells and the space requirements of
all equipment to be housed be carefully determined and efficient use be made of all
space.

The substructures or belowground parts of influent stations are often deep

and expensive because of the low elevation of the incoming sewers. Effluent and
other treatment plant stations, on the other hand, may have little if any substructure.
Rectangular-shaped structures are used to a greater extent than circular-shaped
structures, because there is more usable space in the former. Round caisson-type
structures may, however, be economical if a deep substructure is required where
foundation conditions are poor and horizontal loads are of the same order of
magnitude as vertical pressure.

Most modern sewage disposal works are constructed of concrete, either plain
or reinforced. The sidewalls of tanks are subjected to water pressure from within in
the case of tanks resting on ground while they may also be subjected to earth pressure
(saturated or unsaturated) from outside in the case of underground tanks. • While
designing underground tanks, both conditions of tank full of water and empty have to
be considered. In case of tanks full, water pressure on sidewalls has to be considered
assuming there is no soil outside of the wall. However, in case when tank is empty,
soil pressure is to be considered from outside. If the ground water table is much below
the bottom level of the base slab of tank, the base slab shall be subjected to weight of
water from above and soil reaction from below. Generally, there is very little
difference between the two. The base slab is provided with nominal thickness and
minimum steel. But in case the ground water table is above the base slab, it is to be
designed for the net uplift exerted by the ground water. In such a case, the stability of
the tank against uplift due to ground water has to be maintained. The covering roof
slab, if any, in both these types are designed in a conventional manner depending

11
upon the shape and the end conditions and the loading to which it may be subjected.
The loading may be consisting of self-weight or in addition, turfed soil weight.

Elevated tanks are supported on staging, which may consist of solid or

perforated masonry walls, R.C.C. columns braced together or a thin hollow shaft. The
actual tank portion is designed for water pressure, live load and self-weight of
different parts. The staging is to resist wined forces, and earthquake forces in addition
to the forces transferred from tank proper. The foundation slab in such cases, is
generally provided as raft or on piles depending upon the soil conditions. Leakage or
seepage is a common problem in water retaining structures. To minimize it,
impervious concrete of minimum grade M20 must be used. The design for water
retaining components is based upon no crack theory.

The following three facts... be considered while designing any liquid

retaining structure:

i) Strength
ii) Water tightness a

iii) Overall stability.

3.2 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS OF MATERIALS:

3.2.1 Stresses in steel:

(a) For resistance to cracking:

When steel and concrete are assumed to act together for checking the tensile
stress in concrete for avoidance of cracks, the tensile stress in the steel will be limited
by the requirements that the permissible tensile stress in the concrete is not exceeded;
so the tensile stress in steel shall be equal to the product of modular ratio of steel and
concrete, and the corresponding allowable tensile stress in concrete.

(b) For strength calculations:

For strength calculations the permissible stresses in steel reinforcement shall be as

given in Table 3.1

12
3.2.2 Stresses in concrete:

(a) For resistance to cracking:

For calculations relating to the resistance of members to cracking, the

permissible stresses in tension (direct and due to bending) and shear small conform to
the values specified in Table 3.2. The permissible tensile stresses due to bending
apply to the face of the member in contact with the liquid. In members less than
225mm thick and in contact with the liquid on one side, these permissible stresses in
bending apply also to the face remote from the liquid.

(b) For Strength Calculations:

In strength calculations, the permissible concrete stresses shall be in

accordance with requirements of IS: 456-2000. Where the calculated shear stress in
concrete alone exceeds the permissible value, reinforcement acting in conjunction
with diagonal compression in the concrete shall be provided to take the whole of the
shear.

3.2.3 Stresses due to Drying, Shrinkage or Temperature Change:

These stresses may be ignored provided that the permissible stresses in steel
and concrete are not otherwise exceeded. Further adequate precautions are taken to
avoid cracking of concrete during construction period and until the reservoir is put to
use. Shrinkage stresses may however be required to be calculated in special cases,
when a shrinkage coefficient of 300 x 10-6 may be assumed. The coefficient of
concrete may be taken as 11 x 10 -6 /°C. When the shrinkage stresses or temperature
stresses are allowed, the permissible tensile stresses in concrete (direct and bending)
may be increased by 33Y, %.

3.2.4 Concrete:

In liquid retaining structures, a dense, impermeable concrete is thus

required. Concrete Mix weaker than M20 is not generally used in tank proper. The
minimum quantity of cement in the concrete mix shall not be less than 3000 N/m 3.

13
3.2.5 Walls:

a) Pressure on Walls:

Pressure due to water or soil (dry or saturated) should be considered in the

design of walls. For computation of pressures, the density of water is taken as 9810
N/m3 and that of dry soil 16000N/rn3 (Normally). The pressure of saturated soil
although depends upon degree of saturation, but the pressure of fully saturated soil
may betaken as the sum of water pressure plus the submerged weight of soil, i.e.

1— sin 0
p = w.h +(w, — w)
1+ sin 0

Where p = pressure due to saturated soil

w = density of water
ws = dry density of soil
(I)= angle of repose of soil
h = height of saturated soil

b) Design Criteria:

i) On liquid retaining face, the tensile stresses due to combination of direct horizontal
tension and bending action should satisfy the following conditions;

Cr.(' + Cr cr' <1

r 6c!

Where at, = calculated direct tensile stress in concrete

at = permissible direct tensile stress in concrete
act, = calculated tensile stress due to bending in concrete
act, = permissible tensile stress due to bending in concrete

ii) Sidewalls of tanks may be designed as vertical cantilevers or as two-way slabs

in case of rectangular tanks. The walls may be assumed to be hinged or free at top
and hinged or fixed at the bottom.

14
3.2.6 Roofs:

i) Provision of Movement joints:

To avoid the possibility of cracking, it is important to ensure that movement

joints in the roof corresponds with those in .the walls, if roof and walls are monolithic.
If, however provision is made by means of sliding joint for movement between the
roof and the wall correspondence of joints is not so important.

ii) Loading:

Field covers of liquid retaining structures should be designed for gravity loads,
such as the weight of roof slab, earth cove of any, live loads and mechanical
equipment. They should also be designed for upward load if the liquid retaining
structure is subjected to internal gas pressure.

A superficial load sufficient to ensure safety with the unequal intensity of

loading which occurs during the placing of the earth cover should be allowed for in
designing roof. The engineer should specify a loading under these temporary
conditions, which should not be exceeded. In designing the roof, allowance should be
made for the temporary condition of some spans loaded and other spans unloaded
even through in the final state the load may be small and evenly distributed.

iii) Water tightness:

In case of tanks intended for the storage of water for domestic purposes, the
roofs must be made watertight. This may be achieved by limiting the stress as for the
rest of the tank, or by the use of the covering of the waterproof membrane or by
providing slopes to ensure adequate drainage.

iv) Protection against corrosion..

Protection measures shall be provided to the underside of the roof to prevent it

from corrosion due to condensation.

3.2.7 Minimum Reinforcement:

(a) The minimum reinforcement in walls, floors and roofs in each of two
directions at right angles shall have an area of 0.3 per cent of the concrete section in
that direction for sections up to 100 mm thickness. For sections of thickness greater
than 100 mm and less than 450 mm, the minimum reinforcement in each of the two

15
directions shall be linearly reduced from 0.3 percent of 100 mm. thick section to 0.2
percent for 450 mm thick sections. For sections of thickness greater than 450 mm,
minimum reinforcement in each of the two directions shall kept at 0.2 per cent. In
concrete sections of thickness 225 mm or greater, two layers of reinforcement steel
shall be placed one near each face of the section to make up the minimum
reinforcement.

(b) In special circumstances, floor slabs may be constructed with percentage of

reinforcement less than specified above. In no case the percentage of reinforcement
in any member be less than 0.15% of gross sectional area of the member.
The different percentages of steel to be provided as minimum steel in a
direction for various thick nesses of concrete section are given in table 3.3
3.2.8 Minimum Cover to Reinforcement:

(a) For liquid faces of parts of members either in contact with the liquid (such as
inner faces of roof slab) the minimum cover to all reinforcement should be 25mm or
the diameter of the main bar whichever is greater. In the presence of the sea water
and soils and water of corrosive characters the cover should be increased by 12 mm
but this additional cover shall not be taken into account for design calculations.
(b) For faces away from liquid and for parts of the structure neither in contact
with the liquid on any face, nor enclosing the space above the liquid, the cover shall
be as for ordinary concrete member.

bearing capacity of soil is taken as 50 tIm2. Soil has a unit weight y, of 19.4 kN/m2
and angle of internal friction ck, of 27.67. The water table is at a depth of 13.75m
from ground level.

4.3.6 RATIONALIZATION:
The design output results given by STAADPRO have been rationalized while
detailing and making structural drawings. Due care has been taken to provide
minimum percentages of reinforcement as per IS: 456-2000, continuity if
reinforcement in other spans and keeping in view ductility requirements and other
coda[ provisions, etc., even if the design requirement is less than minimum.

4.3.7 STRUCTURAL DESIGN CALCULATIONS:

The Space frame analysis of the structure with given dimensions of the
structure, breams and columns sizes has been done on STAADPRO 2001 standard
software, under given loading conditions assuming bottom of all columns fixed. The
Staad input files of pumping station and screening chamber have been included in the
Appendix —I and Appendix —II respectively. The output files have been included in
the chapter 6.

4.3.8 GANTRY GIRDER AND STAIRCASES:

Programs have been developed for the design of Gantry Girder and
staircases. The capacity of Crane has been taken as 50 kN. The staircases have a tread
of 250 mm and rise of 160 / 170 mm. The staircase loads can be obtained from the
program. Thus the load is applied by means of uniformly distributed load onto the
beams in case of dry well and in the case of wet well and screening chamber the loads
are applied by means of joint loads and joint moments.

5. SOFTWARE FOR GANTRY GIRDER AND STAIRCASE

5.1 General:

The programs have been developed for the design of gantry girder, staircase and

staircase beams. The various design details of these elements are explained in this

chapter. This includes input, flow charts and output details. The test examples are also

included at the end of this chapter.

5.2 DESIGN OF GANTRY GIRDER:

Gantry girders are examples of laterally unsupported beams in industrial

buildings. The cranes are used in industrial buildings to lift and transport heavy jobs,

machines from one place to another. The crane may be manually operated or electrically

operated. In the package Design option for concrete section is available. The notations

that have been used in the program are shown in fig.5.1

500 4000 to 5000 1200 400 80

The support conditions are assumed to be fixed for gantry span.. Design of

concrete section is done by limit state method of design. For calculating permissible

shear strength in concrete, following formulae are used:

33
Concrete Grade TC

M15 TC = 0.337 + 0.231 * PST

TC = 0.71, if PST > 1.75
M20 TC = 0.39 + 0.195 * PST

TC = 0.82, if PST 2.25,

M25 TC = 0.414 + 0.1879 * PST

M30 TC = 0.420 + 0.1990 * PST

M35 TC = 0.410 + 0.2110 * PST
M40 TC = 0.426 + 0.2130 * PST

Where PST = Percentage of reinforcement

TC — Permissible shear strength

The flowchart of the program has been shown in fig.5.2.
