CHAPTER 5 : SOME OTHER HOLIDAYS IN THE US

5.1 MARTIN LUTHER KING'S BIRTHDAY JANUARY 15

This is the birthday of a famous pastor, his name is King. Unfortunately, this pastor was murdered on
April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee, where he came to help black garbage collectors strike for equal
wages. He is a human rights activist in the US and received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to fight
for equal rights for black people in America. He was the one who introduced five important civil rights
laws that ended discrimination in public places, and the most famous law was the law prohibiting
discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. . This law was passed by President
Lyndon Johnson and was established and signed into law by the President.

5.2 Veterans Day November 11

America has fought many major wars such as World Wars 1 and 2, China,
Vietnam, Iraq,... and many soldiers died in those wars. That's why surviving
warriors returning from wars receive special attention. And November 11
was chosen as a day to honor those veterans.
5.3 American Independence Day July 4th

In America, Independence Day is an important holiday commemorating the


signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. During this occasion, people
often participate in activities such as parades, outdoor festivals, and fireworks
displays. . This is an opportunity to show pride and honor national heritage through
artistic performances and speeches of praise. Families often gather together,
organize outdoor parties and enjoy time together. This day is also an opportunity to
hang the American flag in front of the house, expressing patriotism and national
pride.
