a)What three factors / conditions increase our drive to reduce uncertainty? Why?

Incentives/ passive strategy: If a person were to observe another in their natural environment,
intentionally unnoticeable, to gain information on another would be categorized as using a
passive tactic for reducing uncertainties. For example, watching someone in class, cafeteria, or
any common area without attracting attention.

Deviation/active strategy: an active strategist would result to means of reducing uncertainties

without any personal direct contact. For example, if one were to ask a friend about a particular
person, or ask the particular person's friend for some information without actually confronting
the person directly.

Anticipation of future interaction strategy: an interactive strategist would directly confront the
individual and engage in some form of dialog to reduce the uncertainties between the two.

b) Describe two kinds of uncertainty experience when we meet strangers. Put those in the
context of a recent example from your life.

Cognitive Uncertainty and Behavioral Uncertainty

Cognitive uncertainty is the uncertainty in knowing what another person has thought or is
thinking, or uncertainty about our own thoughts.

Behavioral uncertainty is the uncertainty associated with being able to predict or explain a
person’s behavior, or in knowing what behaviors are expected of us or predicting our own
actions

Last Monday at the hair salon, there was an young man and I sat right next to him, I was
curious because we didn't know each other. I concluded what kind of man he was using cognitive
uncertainty.During the trip he was only reading the bible and the way he greeted me was in a
religious way. I concluded that he was a religious person and that he probably went to church.

C)Yes i do accept all of Berger’s axioms, as absolutely true.

The Verbal and facial interaction helps a lot in communication as well as non-verbal. in general
all seven axioms are crucial in uncertainty reduction theory.
