Podu Taniyan (1 of 5) - Salutation to Swami Desikan
Taniyan composed by Sri Brahmatantra Swatantra Jeeyar
(1st Jeeyar of parakala mutt and a direct disciple of Sri Vedanta
Desikan)

(He was a) receptacle of Ramanuja’s mercy,

Knowledge and detachment were his ornaments,
(He is) Sri Venkatanathan (his birth name),
I prostrate to him, Vedanta Desikan (master/teacher
of Vedanta)
Chanting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUJ_utRHvWs

Ramanuja here refers to Swamy Vedantha Desikan’s Acharya Sri AthrEya Ramanujacharya (also called
Kidambi AppuLLAr), Swami’s maternal uncle. Presumably, Swami Desikan also had the mercy of the
other Ramanuja – Bhagavad Ramanujar.
(The above is also one of the podu taniyans -- ெபா$ தன(ய*க, – of Divya Prabandham, recited
by Sri VaishNavAs of the vadakalai sect.) 3

The big bow and arrow-wielding gypies – their hands carrying flaming torches (to chase elephants out of plantations),
The elephants that got scared and vacated the plantation*
See a shooting star fall from the expansive sky* And get scared in Thiruvenkatam*
(thinking that the gypsies are dropping the torches from the sky)
The hills of the Lord who rejoiced (on Prahlada’s behalf) by seeing the demon king Hiranyakasipu fall. 11

“O, those in Heaven, if there is any mighty one among you, come & take this hill from me” – He seemed to challenge,
While He, my father, the Lord, who once took the form of a boar, uprooted the hill like a small lump of dirt.
A cocky, wild elephant, with its tusk lost (in an imprudent adventure) and its mouth drooling, lifts its trunk
And looks up to the sky seeking that curved crescent (thinking it’s the lost tusk), on that umbrella of a mountain
called Govardhana.

Charama slokam -- sarva dharmAn

(From Bhagavad Gita, Ch. 18, verse 66)

(“charama” = ultimate
This slokam is so called, because it is said to
indicate the ultimate path to liberation.)

sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śharaṇaṁ vraja

ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣhayiṣhyāmi mā śhuchaḥ
sarva-dharmān—all varieties of dharmas; parityajya—abandoning; mām—unto me; ekam—only; śharaṇam—take
refuge; vraja—take; aham—I; tvām—you; sarva—all; pāpebhyaḥ—from sinful reactions; mokṣhayiṣhyāmi—shall
liberate; mā—do not; śhuchaḥ—fear

Translation
BG 18.66: Abandon all varieties of dharmas and simply surrender unto me alone. I shall liberate you
from all sinful reactions; do not fear. (Giving up dharmas here means giving up the fruits of dharmas,
not dharmas themselves, and relying on saranAgati to Him as the sole upAyam for liberation.)
