1. The following table shows the age, X, in years of the cars for a group of teachers in
Light School.
Age (X) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Number of cars 6 8 12 18 13 9 4 2 2
3. The continuous random variable X has probability density function given by:
𝑥
, 0≤𝑥<2
4
𝑓(𝑥) = {
𝑚(4 − 𝑥), 2 ≤ 𝑥 < 4
0, 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒
4. A sample of 50 washed baking potatoes was selected at random from a large batch. The
weights of the 50 potatoes were found to have a mean of 234 grams and a standard deviation of
25.1 grams. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the mean weight of potatoes in the
batch. [4 marks]
5. In a survey an administration organisation, 8 % of the employees to say that they are in favour
of flexible hours of working. Another random sample of 150 employees is taken and found
that 20 are in favour of flexible hours of working. Test, at the 5 % level of significance and
state whether the employees are in favour of flexible hours. [7 marks]
6. A random sample of 395 people were surveyed and each person was asked to report the highest
education level they obtained. The data that resulted from the survey is summarized in the
following table:
Education High School Bachelors Masters Phd
Gender
Female 60 54 46 41
Male 40 44 53 57
7. (a) The demand for blueberry cupcakes in a cafeteria may be taken to follow a Poisson
distribution with mean 0.6 per hour. The cafeteria opens for 5 days in a week and operates
for 10 hours per day.
i. Find the probability that the demand for blueberry cupcakes is at least 5 in a
day. [2 marks]
ii. Find the probability that there is at most 1 day with zero demand for blueberry
cupcakes in a week. [3 marks]
iii. Given that the demand for blueberry cupcakes is exactly 6 on a particular day, find
the probability that this occurred within the first half of the
day. [3 marks]
8. The lengths of the disposable face masks produced by a factory have a normal distribution
with mean, 𝜇 and standard deviation 0.5 cm. A random sample of 200 disposable face
masks has mean length of 17.5 cm.
a. What is the unbiased estimates of the mean 𝜇 ? [1 mark]
b. Perform a test, at the 5% significance level, to determine whether the mean lengths of
all disposable face masks are 17.4 cm. [6 marks]
c. It is discovered that 12 of these disposable face masks are defective.
i. Construct a 90% confidence interval for the proportion of all disposable face masks
which are defective. [4 marks]
ii. Determine the sample size needed in order to estimate proportion of the disposable
face masks which are defective to be within 0.05, with 96% confidence.
[4 marks]
